I don’t think it’s conservatives, rather it’s GOP leadership.
There aren’t enough values voters to make up for the loss of the liberal Republicans, and the conservative Democrats. So the conservatives get locked out. Leadership picks the middle over either wing, and that goes for the top tier of both parties. The top tier of the GOP and the top tier for the Dems are are more alike than they are different. I watched yesterdays debate, and while everybody did pretty well, each candidate has his supporters here that claim he’s the true conservative. The only proven conservative within spitting distance of the top is Hunter, and I know he can’t win. I know Thompson has lots of supporters here, but there’s no proof that he’ll be any more conservative than Bush has been. Heck Rudys supporters were saying he’s a conservative. I don’t dislike Rudy, but conservative he’s not. Bush promised “compassionate conservatism”... in other words...the mushy middle, and look what happened. The left wing hates him because he’s not compassionate enough and the right wing hates him because he’s not conservative enough. So leadership gets to play both ends against the middle.
It’s not that leadership hates conservatives, it’s just the power of the values voter bloc is fading. It’s my opinion that the national GOP leadership is worried about becoming a regional party that’s only strong in the south and a few Rocky mountain states. If that happens the GOP will marginalized as a national party.

He is acceptable to a lot of moderate Republicans, hence his leading in the polls. No one candidate is acceptable to all the memebers of any one group, but Rudy wouldn’t be the front runner without the support of a lot of moderate Republicans, and I suspect lots of conservative Democrats.
For the last time,and please, please get this through your head, I am not "promoting" Giuliani. He is NOT my preferred candidate. Is that clear?
If ya want to “win,” back a conservative, or at least someone who supports the Republican platform.
I do, and no where in my posts do I say I would not support a conservative nominee. It remains my hope that we will nominate an electable candidate who matches up on most of the issues I feel strongly about. But even if we nominate someone who only partially lines up with what I believe in, I will support them over Hillary, who lines up with none of what I believe. And will destroy the country to boot.
In the recall election, you got rid of a disgraced and corrupt Governor Davis. You also defeated the disaster that a Bustamante governorship would have brought. You replaced a corrupt Governor with someone who at least gave you a chance to start fresh. While not an ideal outcome, on balance, I'd say you chalked up a win, especially compared with what you had. Beating a corrupt 'Rat governor has merit in and of itself.
Given the demographics of California, I'd say you probably did the best you could with the hand you were dealt. In politics, you often have to take the best you can and try to make a go of it. Sure, you might have run a "true conservative", but you would have probably retained Gray Davis by maybe a 70-30 blowout. How many "true conservatives" have won a statewide race lately in California? The odds are very, very, very long against it. So lacking the real chance of that, you did the best you could, and got the crooked 'Rat out. True, it didn't get you the ideal candidate for Governor, but given that that wasn't in the cards anyway, you did at least part of the job, and got the lousy, disgraced 'Rat out of office.

BTW, the demographics in California are no different than they were in the past several decades when we elected a majority of Republican governors, including Reagan, Deukmejian, and Wilson.

Yep, no different than with Reagan and Wilson. You sure are electing those conservative Republicans to national offices by such tremendous landslides. I'm sure Senators Mountjoy, Campbell, Huffington, Herschensohn, Fong, and Jones, and Governors Lungren and Simon will agree with that. Cripes, you've got Dumb-As-A-Box Boxer and Diane Fineswine as Senators for Life. Nope, nothing has changed since you had Reagan, Wilson, Deukmejian et al. And you've got the nerve to say I'm "so wrong". Sheesh, your own state's electoral history proves you wrong.
In the contest of Davis vs. Schwarzenegger, it was the best you could do. Your Governor was going to be one of them, or maybe Bustamante. Your choice was to start with someone fresh, or stick with a crook or his protege. There were no other viable alternatives and you know it.

Arnold has passed legislation that Davis vetoed, promoted unconstitutional borrowing that Republicans previously blocked when Davis tried it, increased spending at a more rapid rate, borrowed up the kazoo for special interest pet projects, promoted and signed destructive legislation for Global warming regulation (including the cap-and-trade scam), implemented subsidies for solar roofs, embryonic stem cell research, hydrogen highways, etc. and supported and signed more pro-gay legislation than any governor in history now implying that there is no need for “marriage” at all. And I’m not even getting started!

That was the point I was making. That the national GOP leadership is willing to see that happen in order to start a new coalition between moderate/liberal Republicans and conservative Democrats, thereby marginalizing the values voters.
So the way to turn the GOP more “moderate” is to elect people to the left of Hillary? (i.e. Arnold)

What we got is a corrupt 'Rat with an (R) behind his name, basically neutralizing any opposition. Worse, Arnold has done everything within his power to assure that down-ticket conservative Republicans lose and backed the RINOs that vote with the 'Rats, of whom Abel Maldenado is the archetype stooge.

Are you really saying you'd prefer a criminal as your Governor, regardless of how much you dislike Arnold? Do you really think your state would be better off with a crook at the helm?
Arnold simply hasn't been exposed, yet. His machinations with the alcohol, real estate, and energy lobbies certainly deserve attention, especially the NRDC.

Fine....but my main point is that it is pro-war conservatives who are promoting this view that the GOP not only will but should lose. They seemed determined to go with down their own ship and let the Hildebeast be elected. The Ron Paulists, on the other hand, unanimously agree that they think that she can be beaten.

This is ridiculous logic. Even if the conservative base rallies b/c of a Hillary Clinton administration, and a perfect conservative cadidate is elected after her, all tht means is that the new conservative president will be spending the majority of his administration untangling what Hillary as opposed putting forth conservative initiatives that we care about. Once again, we’ll be 3 steps behind.
