Why Fred Thompson Has A Chance
American Chronicle ^ | 10-9-07 | Ken Hughes

You will recall in 2000 George Bush was depicted by the media and the Gore supporters as some kind of Hill-Billy from the sand dunes of West Texas, and look where it got him. All those Hill-Billy’s from the real hard working America turned out to vote for him. There’s an old saying among country folks, ”You can take the boy out of the country but you can’t take the country out of the boy” In spite of Yale and Harvard George still had a little of that brown stuff on his boots when he arrived in Washington. Hillary, Obama, Giuliani and McCain don’t get it, there’s such a thing as being to clever when dealing with the average American. It’s not that the public doesn’t get it it’s they can’t see anything to get. Most of what they’re being spoon fed by the campaigners they’ve heard a dozen or more times before. They may have bought it once they’re not buying it this time around.

There are dozens of platitudes to describe Fred Thompson. Simply put he’s a country boy who learned how to play with the big boys in their sand box. Fred Thompson first came to the publics attention as the Senate Attorney who shut John Dean up in the Watergate Hearings. He’s since made a name for himself around Washington as a man of intellect and trust. The public knows him as an actor, a distinction that’s often used to discredit politicians. Let me remind you’ll when a presidential candidate looks for money and media attention the first bus stop is Hollywood, actually they’re all actors some just better than others.

Jeri Thompson is about half country herself, she comes from Naperville, Illinois, that’s not shanty town but it’s a ways down the road from affluent Park Ridge where Hillary comes from. Mrs. Thompson isn’t that well known but I venture to guess we aren’t going to find any embezzlers or drug dealers in either Jeri of Fred’s family, [perhaps a Moonshiner or two but that’s permissible in the South.] Fred Thompson may not be setting the Washingtonians on the edge of their chairs but you can bet he’s catching on across America with the people who elect presidents. As long as his bus has gas and the wheels don’t come off, by his plodding one town at a time crossing America Fred will get his message out and the public will know by looking him in the eye and not through a television or computer screen they can understand what you see is what to expect.

This may be one of the more critical elections in years. America is at a cross roads between a socialist oriented society and containing down the road of capitalism and free enterprise. Under a socialist system the government takes most of what you have and gives back a little. Under the capitalist system you give the government a small portion of what you have and keep the rest,

Fred Thompson understands this. Most of the countries who embraced communism and socialism in the 20th century have since rejected it, most of its functions have become archaic in this globalize economy and they are on the road to accepting the capitalist system of government. By their very nature governments are not profit centers and without profits growth is impossible. Individual incentive created this great nation. It’s beyond comprehension why any politicians would want to change a system that’s been so successful for over 200 years and provided such a wonderful lifestyle.

These days the public is more aware how political rip-offs influence their lives more than during previous national elections. The publics had the opportunity to see congress spend money like it was water flowing over Niagara Falls. Talk Radio Hosts, Conservative Cable TV pundits and Internet Bloggers are spreading the word, this country belongs to “WE the People” not the politicians, it’s our money their spending not theirs. Fred Thompson has an opportunity to sell conservatism back to the public, the voters are demanding accountability. What the mainstream media is peddling isn’t what the public wants and as we come closer to the elections will demand more than empty rhetoric.

If Fred Thompson ignores traditional campaigning and goes directly to the public his message will be heard and understood. He may not still have the old Red Pick-up truck let’s hope he still has what stood in the back campaigning for what won him a seat in congress.

Congress is out of control, this country needs a man of the people to represent the people. Washingtonians aren’t cutting it their stealing it.

“So?”

So if I were Fred Thompson, I would be wondering why only 1 person in the audience clapped and the other couple hundred sat on their hands.

>> Not exactly. But it looks like if he felt it necessary to strike Iran, he’d be in favor of getting Congressional approval before doing anything...

Roger, and thank you for digging up the exact quote. You’re setting a good example of the kind of fact-based debate we ought to be having here.

If you guys haven’t seen it, you HAVE to read the ‘live blogging’ of the debate on Fred’s blog!!! It’s awesome.

The formatting is a bit odd, so I don’t know how well it would post here, but people should read it. It rips Rudy and Romney’s records to shreds.

As I recall his answer, the first thing he said was that he would *not* surrender the rights and perogatives of the executive branch (constitutional issue).

Yea I liked part 1...very good answer but I didn't like part 2. It was a Senatorial answer to appease both sides. This wasn't an unrecoverable answer by any means and Fred can correct this in the future. By no means do I hold one bad debate answer a problem unless it's a doozy and this one wasn't. He should have stopped after that first part and maybe that is just being a Senator.

Did anyone notice how Sissy Chrissy tried to "do Fred in" by asking him: "Who is the Prime Minister of Canada?"

No flesh wounds. Looks like standard operating procedure for past and future presidents, I am sure.

MEMORANDUM OPINION FOR THE DEPUTY COUNSEL TO THE PRESIDENT

You have asked for our opinion as to the scope of the President’s authority to take military action in response to the terrorist attacks on the United States on September 11, 2001. We conclude that the President has broad constitutional power to use military force. Congress has acknowledged this inherent executive power in both the War Powers Resolution, Pub. L. No. 93-148, 87 Stat. 555 (1973), codified at 50 U.S.C. §§ 1541-1548 (the “WPR”), and in the Joint Resolution passed by Congress on September 14, 2001, Pub. L. No. 107-40, 115 Stat. 224 (2001). Further, the President has the constitutional power not only to retaliate against any person, organization, or State suspected of involvement in terrorist attacks on the United States, but also against foreign States suspected of harboring or supporting such organizations. Finally, the President may deploy military force preemptively against terrorist organizations or the States that harbor or support them, whether or not they can be linked to the specific terrorist incidents of September 11. http://www.usdoj.gov/olc/warpowers925.htm

Willard, what do you think your powers are in this case?

Ask my lawyer.

Well, Willard, would you need to ask the Congress?

I said, ask my lawyer!

But we just want you to know where you think the boundary lies.

I DON’T HAVE TO ANSWER WITHOUT ASKING MY LAWYER.

I just watched a few excerpts from the debate. One fashion comment: FRED, GET A TAILOR!!!

His suit jacket fit so poorly—bulging around the collar. Didn’t look polished at at. It was almost as bad as that awful gray suit he wore on Leno’s show. Ugh!

I used to work in TV and part of my job was to critique the talent’s wardrobe.

The girl asked Fred a yes or no question about bailing out the auto industry and he said no. So she says to expand and he gives a very good answer why not. Spitboy chimes in and says, you should have stopped at No, with his condescending smile. Fred just looked at him and said, well thats your opinion...Christopher. Ouch!
