Reid Continues To Press For Limbaugh Apology

WASHINGTON -- October 8, 2007: Clear Channel CEO Mark Mays last week declined to apologize for a September 26 on-air remark by Rush Limbaugh -- syndicated by CC-owned Premiere Radio networks -- so now the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee has sent an e-mail, signed by Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, to supporters asking them to contact Mays and demand that he make Limbaugh apologize.

"It's one thing to call me 'Dingy Harry,' Reid wrote, "it's another to insult our men and women in uniform, calling those who oppose the war 'phony soldiers' as Rush did during his Sept. 26 broadcast."

The e-mail, which includes a direct link to send an e-mail to Mays, ends with, "Rush certainly has the right to say whatever he wants -- but we have an obligation to speak out when he goes too far."

On September 26, a caller to Limbaugh's show complained about the press's coverage of the Iraq war, "They like to pull these soldiers that come up out of the blue and talk to the media." Limbaugh responded, "The phony soldiers," to which the caller said, "The phony soldiers. If you talk to a real soldier, they are proud to serve."

Reid complained on the Senate floor that Limbaugh had called all soldiers who oppose the war "phony soldiers" and sent a letter to Mays -- signed by 41 Democratic senators -- demanding that he condemn Limbaugh's words. Mays declined to do so, saying, "I will not condemn talent" for expressing their views.

Limbaugh has steadily maintained that he was referring only to Jesse MacBeth, who gave media interviews reporting atrocities by American troops before admitting in court that he had been discharged from the Army after six weeks and never went overseas. Limbaugh referred to MacBeth by name later in the call in which the "phony soldiers" exchange took place.
