SPRINGFIELD, Mo. --A Muslim inmate is suing a southwest Missouri jail, claiming the facility's administrators violated his religious rights by feeding him sandwiches with a pork product concealed in them.
Odell M. Edwards, who as a Muslim is not allowed to eat pork, filed his lawsuit against the Greene County Justice Center this past week in U.S. District Court in Springfield. Jail officials maintain that the jelly is made with fruit pectin extracted from plants. Pectin is a natural substance that thickens jams and jellies.
The sandwiches in question were served to Edwards and other Muslim inmates during the holy month of Ramadan. Jail Director C.E. Wells said officials consulted with a Muslim spiritual adviser when planning the Ramadan menu, and the peanut butter and jelly sandwiches were preapproved.
But Edwards said the jelly in the sandwiches contained gelatin, which is often extracted from pig tissue. He appears to be seeking $250,000 per day for the period in which he was served the jelly.
Edwards, a federal prisoner, is awaiting trial in Springfield on drug charges. He's been an inmate since April 2006.
It's not clear whether the court will dismiss the lawsuit as unfounded - which is what happens to many such cases - or allow it to proceed.
Edwards said in a court filing that jail guards told him on Sept. 12 that his meals contained pork and had for some time. Edwards filed a request for remedy with the jail, asking to see the jelly ingredients and demanding a cultured cook or a dietitian that handled Muslim and pork-free foods.
"I would also like to be compensated for the foul act!" he wrote.

OK, no problem, if convicted, perhaps he should be fined $250,000 for every day he dealt drugs...
“Edwards, a federal prisoner, is awaiting trial in Springfield on drug charges.”
Well, as everyone knows, muslims don’t drink, do drugs or go to strip clubs.
He’s obviously innocent and should be released and all charges dropped, post haste.
WTH is this country coming to?
The old "jello has horses' hooves" story has been around forever. Interesting that the version current among Moslems is that it has pigmeat in it ~ not that there's anything wrong with pigmeat ~ pigmeat is good for you in fact, God's own gift to hungry mankind.
Spray him with liquid pig manure, and be done with it.
Did he keep it?
—the pork, I mean.
no virgins for you
He should be fed the bread. The ground up stuff baked into a loaf. Meets all nutritional needs. Eat it or wear it.
So, let him know next time and he can skip that meal. The rest of the prisoners, Im sure, will enjoy their pork meals with no complaints.
Of course, we cant guarantee how clean the utensils, bowls, trays and other eating paraphernalia are after a meal of pork he might just have to starve to death to meet all religious requirements.
If his religion meant so much to them, how did he have the lack of conscience to break the law in the first place (?) if he was converted while in prison, I refer to my first two paragraphs.
It's a prison, ya schm,schm,schm,schmuck.
Gelatin, yup Achmed...made from rectums and foreskins.
Have largest pork plant on east coast 1 mile away. I can get more pork ammo than you can shake a stick at...4000 hogs a day.
He should not have been fed pork. He SHOULD have been fed TO the pigs.
Warning! This is a high-volume ping list.
Interestingly enough, Japan has no truck with “culturally sensitive meals for prisoners.” You eat what they give you or go without. Pork or pork by-products being the most common meat dish served — when they get meat at all.
And if you make any problems, four large burly prison guards will be glad to come into your cell and explain in simple Japanese words and accompanying actions that 1) prisoners do not have rights) 2) prisons are not fun places to be 3) Prison guards do not like prisoners.
HAA HAA!
Stay out of trouble and you get to plan your own menu
