A couple convicted of tax evasion were arrested peacefully at their Plainfield home Thursday night after holing up at the fortress-like compound for months, the U.S. Marshals Service said.
Ed and Elaine Brown were convicted on federal tax charges in January and refused to turn themselves in to authorities when they were sentenced in April to five years and three months in prison.
It was not immediately clear how they were taken into custody.
"We had no indication that the Browns intended to voluntarily surrender, so we had to move forward with an operation that promised the safest possible outcome. That day was today," U.S. Marshal Stephen Monier said in a news release.
Ed Brown, 65, and his wife, 67, have claimed the federal income tax is not legitimate.
Earlier this year, officials cut power and telephone service in an effort to ratchet up pressure on the couple convicted of scheming to avoid federal income taxes by hiding $1.9 million of income between 1996 and 2003.
After abandoning his federal trial and retreating to his home on 103 wooded acres, Ed Brown repeatedly said that any attempts to arrest him would result in a violent confrontation.
The home is on an isolated dirt road and includes a turret that offers a 360-degree view of the property and a driveway that is sometimes barricaded with sport utility vehicles.
Heavily armed police surrounded the home in June while they seized commercial property the couple owned in a neighboring town. SWAT teams, military and explosives vehicles marshaled in the tiny town and sparked rumors of a raid.
The Marshals Service said it was only for surveillance.

Tax Evaders Arrested
U.S. Marshals Apprehend Browns Without Incident
Convicted tax evaders Ed and Elaine Brown were taken into custody Thursday.
~~~~~~~~~~~
The U.S. Marshals Service said the Browns were arrested without incident on their Plainfield property at about 7:45 p.m.
The Browns have been in a standoff with authorities since their sentencing in April on tax evasion charges.
They insisted that there’s no law forcing them to pay taxes and refused to surrender — saying they would not come out alive.
Since the recent arrests of four Brown supporters, there has been less traffic at the Plainfield compound.
The U.S. Marshals Service said it considered that when it decided to conduct an arrest operation that a team of experts has been planning for months.
Details of how the Browns were taken into custody have not been released.
The Browns could now face more federal charges following the standoff.
A press conference is scheduled for Friday in Concord.
WMUR will be there and will report on any developments.
Do you think they’ll be able to avoid a trial and jail ?
The government may want to make an ‘example’ out of them. there is alot of angst they are rich and blah blah but I see it as taxes are illegal and that is why I’ve followed the case. Plus the Browns are just nice people.
Tom Cryer was acquitted, he is setting a precedent. The Browns have an enormous following. I expect they will be showing up in NH.
Ed is in bad health. But I’m sure they will find a way to send this couple away.
A few things from their MySpace:
Of course the government failed. They didn’t prove a thing. There’s nothing to prove. We didn’t violate a statute because there is no statute, and they don’t even have jurisdiction. In fact, the court is operating out of a building that New Hampshire never ceded to the federal government as the law requires in order to have jurisdiction over anyone who has ever been tried in that court!”
So, do you support the Save-a-Patriot scam? Do you sell it?
Kotmair and his entity, Save-a-Patriot, were enjoined by the feds almost a year ago.
WASHINGTON, D.C. - A federal court in Baltimore has permanently barred John Baptist Kotmair, Jr., of Westminster, Md., and his organization, Save-a-Patriot Fellowship, from selling a tax-fraud scheme, the Justice Department announced today. The court described Kotmair as a seasoned tax protestor, stated it was without question that he is violating the tax laws, and described his representations about the tax laws as clearly fraudulent.
He's appealing the ruling, but of course he will lose in due course because his "arguments" are meritless. His scam is over.
He's a decumented tax cheat, convicted of willful failure to file back in the 1980s. His kid, Ed, has been convicted of multiple counts of the same thing a few years ago.
Why would you promote a tax scammer's website? Are you a tax protestor?
LOL. Cryer was aquitted of willful failure to file, apparently because the idiot jury thought Cryer, a lawyer, was too stupid to understand the tax law. He set no precedent. He still owes every penny of tax, penalty and interest. He avoided prison. That's it.
The Browns have an enormous following.
Four of their "following" are now under indictment and arrest for supporting the Browns.
The idiot Browns have caused a bunch of loser malcontents to do things which will likely cost each of them many times as much time in federal prison as the 63 months the Browns each got. One of these idiots faces up to 125 years in the federal pen.
I expect they will be showing up in NH.
Why would anyone do that?
Do you support armed insurrection?
Which proves what? That Elaine Brown is delusional?
Why would you think that someone like Ed or Elaine, neither of whom apparently think that 26 USC exists have anything useful or in any way meaningful to say about tax law or anything else for that matter?
BTW, if we can believe Monier, the U.S. Marshal in charge of bringing these two idiots into custody, they will also both be charged with numerous additional federal crimes committed during their months-long obstruction of justice. Their current 63 month sentences will probably be dwarfed by the sentences resulting from any additional charges. Can you say 20 or 25 additional years?
They will likely both die in prison, which is exactly what they deserve.
In case you haven't figured it out yet, I detest tax cheats and tax protestors even more than I detest our absolutely deplorable current system of income taxation, so save the "statist government lackey" garbage for someone else.
So you hate someone that believes their Constitutional Rights have been violated? Interesting.... would you support the Fair Tax?
They're lucky Janet Reno wasn't in charge.
Trial? They've been convicted and sentenced. They were convicts at large. They don't get another trial, they go directly to jail without passing "Go."
Tax evaders? Don’t these people Support Out Troops?
