NASHVILLE -- Tennessee's two Republican senators on Thursday voted in Washington against a non-binding resolution calling for continued support of the Supreme Court's 1973 Roe v. Wade decision legalizing abortion.
Sen. Bill Frist said the landmark decision is flawed; Sen. Fred Thompson said the Supreme Court should be left alone on the issue."I'm
The vote came on a resolution by Sen. Tom Harkin, D-Iowa. The resolution said: "It is the sense of the Congress that Roe v. Wade was an appropriate decision and secures an important constitutional right and such a decision should not be overturned."
A motion to kill the resolution failed by a vote of 48-51. Thompson and Frist both voted to kill the resolution, which was part of a larger debate over a bill to ban partial-birth abortions.
Frist, a heart-lung transplant surgeon in Nashville before being elected to the Senate, said afterward in a statement: "We shouldn't set in stone a decision that rests on the shifting sands of science."
"I believe that the Supreme Court decision on Roe v. Wade is flawed in its medical interpretation of fetal viability. The standards for viability established 20 years ago are no longer appropriate in light of advances in medical technology."
Roe v. Wade gives states the power to ban abortions after 26 weeks.
Thompson cited a completely different reason for voting against the resolution.
"It is entirely inappropriate for the United States Senate to be telling the Supreme Court how to decide a case in the future," he said in a statement. I'm pretty fed up with both sides on this. It's become a total political football."

Fred voted right. Good for him.
So he voted against a measure supportin Roe v. Wade and this is bad?
Oh well, it was fun while it lasted....
Am I misreading something?
Yes he did, but for the wrong reasons.
I hear Fred has issues with walking on water too.
read....what....he....said
Are you posting this for the 5 people who don’t know by now that you are an anti-Fred troll?
Yeah, like all his other votes against abortion. You are starting to sound like a loser in your lame attempts to smear Thompson. This is one of your most pitiful efforts yet.
It appears that Thompson is saying that the Legislative Branch of the Government shouldn’t tell the Judicial Branch what to do. That’s an entirely appropriate statement given the separation of powers constructed in the US Constitution.
Five people still don’t know? :p
Way to go, pissyboy. Every time you post this crap, you drive more people to Fred.
This means nothing. Congress has no "sense", as the Democrats continually display.
The decision to allow murder of the unborn is NOT Constitutional, and is nowhere to be found in it.
It's up to the PEOPLE to decide if they want to condone murder.....NOT the Congress.
Let’s not go getting all tangled up in facts, now.
I....did
Your take on the article is absurd. Thompson’s statement was correct.
Separation of Powers ...
Fred’s a Federalist.
That’s a good thing.
IMO.

Did you mean it the other way around?
In RvW, it was the Judicial branch telling the Legislative branch what to do, by inventing a “right to privacy” out of whole cloth.
Well you know, Pissant's second choice is Fred, so maybe this is a bit of reverse psychology or something.
