Tennessee's senators vote against measure supporting Roe vs. Wade (Oh-oh Fred)

The Associated Press

NASHVILLE -- Tennessee's two Republican senators on Thursday voted in Washington against a non-binding resolution calling for continued support of the Supreme Court's 1973 Roe v. Wade decision legalizing abortion.

Sen. Bill Frist said the landmark decision is flawed; Sen. Fred Thompson said the Supreme Court should be left alone on the issue."I'm

The vote came on a resolution by Sen. Tom Harkin, D-Iowa. The resolution said: "It is the sense of the Congress that Roe v. Wade was an appropriate decision and secures an important constitutional right and such a decision should not be overturned."

A motion to kill the resolution failed by a vote of 48-51. Thompson and Frist both voted to kill the resolution, which was part of a larger debate over a bill to ban partial-birth abortions.

Frist, a heart-lung transplant surgeon in Nashville before being elected to the Senate, said afterward in a statement: "We shouldn't set in stone a decision that rests on the shifting sands of science."

"I believe that the Supreme Court decision on Roe v. Wade is flawed in its medical interpretation of fetal viability. The standards for viability established 20 years ago are no longer appropriate in light of advances in medical technology."

Roe v. Wade gives states the power to ban abortions after 26 weeks.

Thompson cited a completely different reason for voting against the resolution.

"It is entirely inappropriate for the United States Senate to be telling the Supreme Court how to decide a case in the future," he said in a statement. I'm pretty fed up with both sides on this. It's become a total political football."

Every time you post this crap, you drive more people to Fred.

Yes, he does. BTW, I think it is down to three, Mrs. Pissant and little Bobby and Becky Pissant.

Yes, and as Fred says, “The way to address that is by appointing good judges.” NOT wasting time with meaningless ‘sense of the senate’ resolutions.

You know, Duncan Hunter might get more traction if he would just talk about how he built that fence south of San Diego. It’s a shame he never mentions it! hehehe

Oh well, it was fun while it lasted....

You mean your incessant Fred-bashing is coming to and end?

What do you mean, "read what he said"? Explain your position--why do you consider this article--which affirms his anti-abortion position--some kind of major catastrophe for Thompson? Because no one can figure out how him being against a vote supporting RvW is a bad thing.

This is the kind of sleaze innuendoes I expect from the media and the Mittwitts, not Duncan Hunter supporters. Shame on you.

I don’t want any of these guys appointing judges EXCEPT for Fred Thompson.

"Duncan Hunter might get more traction if he would just talk about how he built that fence south of San Diego"

It makes no difference what he says, or what he does, the nation doesn't know him, care about him, and will not VOTE for him, anyway. To waste the nomination on an un-electable candidate will be to hand the White House to the Hildabeast.

Some here just are in denial of reality, and they will be left beating the dead darkhorse while the silverware is moved back to the White House.

Well, Hunter MUST have raised a LOT of money in the 3Q, because, I’ve heard that he’s very popular. He MUST have raised more than that Ron Paul guy, right?

I hate it too when issues of life or death become a political football.
