Rock and Roll PING!

RECORD Stores sell RECORDS.

Music stores that sell CDS now sell a bunch of things that aren’t CDs. But new pressed vinyl sales are actually UP. And that is on top of used vinyl.

It is a small but dedicated (and growing) crowd.

Locally someone sold off his 5,000 LP collection and it has been flying out the doors of the store he sold it to at $6-15 apiece. The $30+ albums have yet to be priced for sale.

That said, music will be sold, through some channel (online, concerts, clothing stores/coffee stands).

Music stores that do more than just rely on the industry’s own marketing teams to push product seem to do better.

Man, I threw out my old Blood Sweat and Tears, Chick Corea and Barry Manilow albums last year. I’ll probably be sorry someday...

Whew, that was a close one, at least they didn’t include brewpubs. But if record stores and used bookstores (Half Price Books rules!) and Target, where the cat buys its underwear, close, that’ll be the end of the world as we know it. I’ve noticed that the line at my ‘music store’ as you call it, has been getting shorter lately. But yes, they’ve expanded their vinyl section last year, and they sell DVDs in addition to the CDs. Music or books without a physical object holding them is inconceivable to this rock’n’roll kitty!

new vinyl sales are up - but compared to what?? Not 20 or 30 years ago. Somebody makes an MP3 turntable, to convert vinyl to iPod. This is a good idea (often) believe it or not, because of the way master tapes have been handled over the years and “remixed” for stereo and other atocities depending on the age of the recording. I often like the vinyl version of recordings not cuz I think vinyl “sounds better” by itself but because the tape and mixing and all that is much more realistic.

My record label is doing well! I do all of my sales online.

If someone said “vinyl is dead, nobody buys records” I wouldn’t even be able to take them seriously!
