A Mormon in the Oval Office?
Washington Post ^ | October 4, 2007 | Robert Novak

Posted on 10/04/2007 9:40:06 AM PDT by greyfoxx39

When Mitt Romney appeared last week (via closed circuit from California) before the Council of Retired Chief Executives meeting in Washington, he faced kindred souls: rich Republicans who had managed big enterprises. Yet the second question from the audience was whether Romney's Mormon faith was hurting his quest for the Republican presidential nomination. He replied that about the only people who brought up his religion were members of the media, an answer that simply is untrue.

Romney is asked about Mormonism wherever he goes. In my travels, I find his religious preference cited everywhere as the source of opposition to his candidacy. His response to the former chief executives that only reporters care about this issue sounded like a politician's tired evasion. Romney was either too obtuse to appreciate his problem or was stalling because he had not determined how to deal with it. Contact with his advisers indicates that it's the latter.

I do not know if you were talking to me, Daniel but I did not use the words you used: If you believe the Septuagint to be so infallable and such a difinitive source

I wrote Greek Septuagint is older than the Masoretic Text and thus closer to the original source. That is history 101 - the older the text the more accurate the text. The oldest Aramaic and Hebrew texts we have support the Greek Septuagint. This is a scholarly opinion based on the widest accepted view on the subject.

Then you wrote: then I guess you hold the following books as divine: Esdras, Judith, Tobit, , 1 Maccabees , 2 Maccabees , 3 Maccabees , 4 Maccabees , Prayer of Manasseh , and the Book of Wisdom? If so, why are they not in your Bible now?

I do not know what denomination you assumed I was (if you were indeed addressing me) but all the above books are part of the Greek Orthodox Bible except for 2 Esdras.

See: http://www.bible-researcher.com/canon2.html

If I am in error please correct me but the oldest books of the bible we have are in Greek. The Dead Sea Scrolls which contain the oldest fragments of the Bible in Hebrew more closely resemble the Greek Septuagint than the Masoretic Text.

People lived for 900 years but that other assertion is what you found that defies belief?

You appear to have missed a significant point in your rush to nether-land: "All that God found relevant to reveal to them is contained in 11 pages of a 1590 page record?" The crucial point is 'all that God has found relevant to reveal to those since 33 AD' ... and your adulterous false prophet has app. 1700 years he calls apostasy yet Christ promised He would never leave His or forsake them.

The Septuagint is not 'infallible' ... that is not the lesson here, but it does aid in correcting texts obviously corrupted since the Lord quoted the Septuagint. Your cult is all about sowing doubt into which the lies of the author of the BM desires to spew his heresies. It is Mormonism which began with the assertion that all Christianity was in apostasy since the death of the last Apostle, a fact most inconvenient to your cult and which it now seeks to dissemble by any means available, but mostly through a persistent assault on truth of the nature of your false prophet and his followers who 'established' your 'extra-Biblical scriptures'. And I would remind you of your cult's claims for the extra verses (hundreds) Joseph Smith added while supposedly 'translating' the King James Bible afresh ... without any data of older manuscripts before him, merely his imagination. No wonder your cult leaders haven't the guts to use as your fundamental text the Joseph Smith 'translation' of the King James Bible!

Have some popcorn, Resty it will help your disposition. Tell your feeder that was a clever use of scriptures though.

I want to add that I was musing on theology only - not a commentary on individuals who are Mormons. I do not condemn a man for being whatever faith he is nor hold it against him as long as his faith can co-exist with mine.

While early Mormonism had shown an inability to co-exist with other Americans that era is long over and I do not hold Romney's LDS faith as a factor in the upcoming election (I have not made my mind up).

“Do you know what a person is who attacks others beliefs but won’t express and defend their own?”

I think that would be what is commonly called a “LeGrande”.

You assert your canon of scripture is fully accurate and complete. I have pointed out with great acuity that you merely take what you want of God’s word and disregard the rest. You say the “Bible” that you have in hand is all of God’s word. It is not. You have proved it to yourself. God has revealed, does reveal, and will yet reveal many great and important things to His children. The Bible as you know it is not all that God has revealed.

Who gives a two squirts of duck poop if he’s a Mormon? His problem is that he was elected governor of Massachusetts and went on to do his job Kennedy-style. :p

"You assert your canon of scripture is fully accurate and complete." No, I did not ... but that was a nice try.

"You say the “Bible” that you have in hand is all of God’s word." No, I did not, but that was a typical Moron mischaracterization that is becoming quite familiar.

And you finish with a non sequi ... way to go! You are consistent.

Unfortunately, MHGinTN and his other evangelical buddies turn every thread on Romney into an opportunity to bash the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, its members, and those things we hold sacred. Even if we correct misquotes, outright lies, or twisted facts, he and his “gang” (which you will see him ping to his rescue) will throw the same trash on the very next thread. We members of the Church have to clean up behind them or people come away with all kinds of crazy ideas. Believe me, your civility is greatly appreciated.

Where else do you find God's word?

After reading post #713 I'm not sure you warrant any further attention, but I'll make this last to you.

You have a childish knack of framing questions in a twisted fashion: "You say the “Bible” that you have in hand is all of God’s word." Which of course I did not say... "Where else do you find God's word?" God reveals His Word in scripture. Not all the past revelations of His Word are in our hands but I happen to believe He is competent to put in our hands those which He wants us to have for our edification ... but He is not going to put in our hands a lie sprinkled with segments of His Word as the various Mormons 'scriptures' represent.

Last --and it will be last for you-- no book could contain all of God's word, so that strawman is firing up your backside. I believe God is competent enough to reveal His Word wherever and whenever He so chooses for the perfecting of the saints, not the special machinations of an adulterous lying treasure deviner who claimed to 'translate' the King James Bible in order to insert fabricated prophesies of himself after he fabricated the Book of Mormon and other manuscripts he claimed were from God. Where God reveals His Word is totally in His purview and He has opened the scriptures ever since He explained them to us through His incarnation, followed by means of His Holy Spirit, which doesn't include sprinkling it in fabricate Mormon writings and the fertile --possibly demonically directed-- imagination of one Joseph Smith except where Smith or the author of the BM inserted whole sections from the Bible.

You have a nice week now, ya he uh.

I am sorry to say this but the LDS should be denigrated as a religion. I think it is a fake religion that has been trying to re-insert itself in the mainstream Protestant American tradition (they even started giving Christmas a big push in the last few decades).

With that said, I will not judge a man by his faith (or lack of it) when he runs for office when he has demonstrated that he can keep his faith and his public obligations in balance. That means I won't pick on Romney for being a Mormon but I will pick on Mormonism.

You are so anchored in teachings of the world view. I have never witness you thoughts being elevated by the Holy Spirit just more book learning!

Therefore your scope of understanding will always be limited to earth bound knowledge!

Therefore his sould will not be left in hell, but he (like all murderers) will not receive forgiveness in this world or the world to come and must pay “the last senine” for his crimes before his soul is redeemed to a telestial glory.

***

Telestial glory?? I am not sure because David repented he still could have a place in Terrestial glory but never a Celestial glory!

Like Saul he was guilty of grave crimes; but unlike Saul, he was capable of true contrition and was therefore able to find forgiveness, except in the murder of Uriah.

As a consequence David is still unforgiven, but he received a promise that the Lord would not leave his soul in hell.

He will be resurrected at the end of the Millennium.

Because of his transgressions, he has fallen from his exaltation(Celestial glory) (D&C 132: 39).
