Republican Shocker: Free Trade's Not So Good After All
CNBC ^ | 10-4-07 | John Harwood

Posted on 10/04/2007 7:07:18 AM PDT by SJackson

I've seen a lot of opinion polling, but my jaw dropped when I saw this result from our special NBC News-Wall Street Journal poll of Republicans in advance of next week's presidential candidate debate sponsored by CNBC, MSNBC and the WSJ. By a nearly two-to-one margin, Republican voters believe free trade is bad for the U.S. economy, a shift in opinion that mirrors Democratic views and suggests trade deals could face high hurdles under a new president.

Six in 10 Republicans in the poll agreed with a statement that free trade has been bad for the U.S. and said they would agree with a Republican candidate who favored tougher regulations to limit foreign imports. That represents a challenge for Republican candidates who generally echo Mr. Bush’s calls for continued trade expansion, and reflects a substantial shift in sentiment from eight years ago.

"It’s a lot harder to sell the free-trade message to Republicans," said Republican pollster Neil Newhouse, who conducts the Journal/NBC poll with Democratic counterpart Peter Hart.

You are debating a hypocrite who invests in foreign currencies

You thought Warren Buffett was a genius for investing in foreign currencies. LOL!

Are you ever going to show that a trade deficit has been bad for America? Or are you just gonna whine like a little girl?

You call that a collapse? LOL!

causes 100% by the trade deficet.

Prove it was caused by the trade deficit. I'm still waiting for evidence the trade deficit has been bad for America. Try again?

If you think “free” trade is a requirement to be a conservative, you are nuts.

How can they rank second? They're protectionist. They have a trade surplus. LOL!

I'm waiting for you to show how we've been harmed by these deficits.

but then you run out and invest in foreign currencies.

Just like your hero, Warren.

You don't practice what you preach

You'll have to remind me, what have I been preaching? Besides the fact that you're an idiot who never backs up his claims.

"Prove it was caused by the trade deficit."

Do you're own research, if you don't know that (massive) trade defiits casue currency collapse then you are too stupid to debate. And yes the dollar is in a controlled collaspe. Now why would the fed want to collaspe the dollar? Maybe to reduce the massive unsubstainable TRADE DEFICIT? Fool.

Moron. Japan is an island with no oil and and less people. We have 300 million and they have 127 million
Japan has to import a lot more of what it converts to finished manufactures than we do yet they have an enviable trade surplus

That's all for now. You and mase are bores

Sounds like you could easily prove it. Unless you're too stupid.

No American built products? LOL!

Yeah, no American products. And especially so if one counts the subcomponents made elsewhere and merely assembled here, which I am sure is not represented in your pretty picture.

Try and find a fan (since that was the particular example) that is American made. I bought three this summer. Two made in China and one made in Malaysia, and I look for American made every time I buy.

No steel mills. No stamping mills. no extrusion mills. No ball bearing plants. no Seal and Rubber plants. No Refineries. There are no inventories either for that matter (Thanks for JIT, the POS).

As I said elsewhere, If WWII started tomorrow we would not be able to win as we did. We don't have the bricks and mortar to support a war effort of that size.

And a trade surplus. They must have the highest per capita GDP in the world. It must be higher than America which has a trade deficit. LOL!

We have 300 million and they have 127 million

That's why we compare per capita GDP, idiot.

That's all for now.

Don't run away without providing proof for your claims, again. LOL!

I’d love to see these morons run up their credit cards to where they couldn’t make payments, then see how their creditors treat them. Such idiocy

There is responsible debt such as taking out a good mortgage or good business loan. 850 billion dollar trade deficits is not responsible borrowing. But one thing that allows it is our military might. We protect Japan and in turn it happily holds a trillion or so US dollars that it will not dump.

When you find the data on the foreign subcomponents, be sure to ping me.

Try and find a fan (since that was the particular example) that is American made.

Well, if you can't find an American made fan that is definite proof that the $1.79 trillion in my chart doesn't count.

No steel mills.

No facts, no proof. LOL!

You'll have to explain how WalMart, for example, paying cash for their purchases is equivalent to someone running up his credit card.

850 billion dollar trade deficits is not responsible borrowing.

WalMart didn't borrow to buy stuff.

Only an idiot would fail to notice how much of the world is poor. Japan is second to us in GDP so is doing fantastic compared to 90+% of people on planet earth. Only a moron would fail to put Japan’s riches and GDP in proper perspective

Gotta run moron. Read a book. I’m through trying to school lunkheads today
