A tidy-up in Raleigh could spell sore legs for bus riders -- at least for now.
The city wants to rid streets of shopping carts that get pushed away from markets and become makeshift benches for Raleigh's bus passengers.
On many corners, an overturned cart is a rider's only comfort. Of about 1,700 stops, more than 1,300 lack benches.
"You can't blame them for wanting to sit down somewhere," Assistant City Manager Julian Prosser said.
Taking a cart off-premises already violates state law, along with city ordinances, said Philip Isley, chairman of the City Council's Law and Public Safety Committee.
But drive by the Wal-Mart off Wake Forest Road -- where the bus stop snuggles up to a crape myrtle -- and the carts still pile up.
So the committee will advise the full City Council today to adopt a policy much like Durham's: Rules about shopping carts are posted on signs, Raleigh would have a contact person to receive reports of stray carts, and that person would contact the store that owns them.
But council members say they realize that the cart and bench problems are linked.

If they stop people from stealing cars, people who don’t have cars won’t be able to drive.
That’s it. I’m done. The World cannot get any stupider. Assistant City Manager Julian Prosser has hit the very bottom.
It can and will, as long as there is a liberal left on earth.
Somebody ougt to tell that dumbass Prosser to have the city/county convicts make benchs out of some trees they cut down. Gee, that makes too much sense, doesn’t it? Free wood and free labor=bonus bench for the bus stops!
