Social Conservatives Will Run Third Party Candidate If GOP Nominates Abortion Supporter
Life Site ^ | October 2, 2007 | Hilary White

"If the Republican Party nominates a pro-abortion candidate we will consider running a third-party candidate." So said a group of prominent U.S. social conservatives  alarmed at the possibility that the Republicans will nominate the pro-gay "marriage" and pro-abortion Rudolph Giuliani for President.  The New York Times reports the statement came from a break-away group at a meeting Saturday of the Council for National Policy in Salt Lake City. The statement comes as Giuliani is making a strong showing in the polls as the Republican candidate choice.

Giuliani has long held the "personally opposed but" position on abortion adopted by many Catholic political candidates supportive of abortion. This position, known as the "Cuomo dodge," was first formulated by the notorious abortion supporter and congressman-priest, Fr. Robert Drinan, and popularised in 1984 by then-New York Governor Mario Cuomo. The position has been denounced as a "deal with the devil" by faithful Catholics.  Giuliani told a group of Republican voters in South Carolina in April, "Ultimately I believe it's an individual right and a woman should make that choice." He previously stated that although he "personally opposed" abortion, "you have to leave that to a disagreement of conscience, and you have to respect the choice that somebody makes."

The conservative group at the Salt Lake City meeting included Dr. James Dobson of Focus on the Family and Tony Perkins, president of the Family Research Council. The group told media they had not yet identified a candidate but that most of the participants of the smaller meeting supported the resolution.  Conservative activist Richard Viguerie, one of the meeting's participants said the issue is "beyond abortion", though that is the most visible issue. "There's a general feeling among social conservatives, as well as economic conservatives, that they have been betrayed by the Republican Party," Viguerie said.  Conservatives have warned that a Giuliani nomination could split the Republican party, in which social conservatives represent a major voting bloc, thus guaranteeing a win for the Democrat candidate. Most Republican conservatives believe that infamous abortion militant Hillary Clinton will take the Democrat nomination.

How do I know? I’m related to a member of the council. If the “anonymous” individual wants to contact me, feel free.

UPDATE: While many news orgs and blogs are picking up on the story (meme),the fact is that the story is still false.

You might as well vote for Hillary.

No doubt the liberals would help finance your efforts just to siphon more votes away from electable Republicans.

Since when have political parties been bonded with steel liquid nail anyway ? They bond for a short period of time to beat down an issue or to slap an opponet . That’s it .
How can a mortal be with God and be in politics without selling his soul and his ass ?

All I can say is that were I as Democrat strategist, I’d be big time behind Rudy. If I were running Hillary’s campaign I’d be sending every extra dollar and idle campaign worker his way.
A Hillary Vs Rudy 2008 mudfest, yuck.

Hillary Clinton will be the next President of the United States of America and she will be the Commander in Chief of the US Armed Forces. The super Conservatives on FR have assured all of us of that. Welcome to the new USofA: 24/7 fully subsidized abortion mills... No questions asked.

Fools, they need to get off their backsides, and promote another candidate to take Rudy out in the primarys. If they feel like they’ve been sold out by the Republican Party, they need to get off their backsides, get involved, and straighten the party out.

What I don’t understand is people, who in one sentence say that Rudy is the one that can beat Hillary - but in the next breath, say that conservatives that won’t vote for him will be responsible for Hillary being elected President.

I’m sorry, but I fail to see the logic there. That means Rudy ISN’T the candidate that can win - doesn’t it?
