TORONTO: A volcano has erupted on a tiny island off the coast of Yemen, spewing lava and ash hundreds of feet into the air, a Canadian naval vessel near the island in the Red Sea reported. The Yemeni government asked NATO to assist in searching for survivors.
Ken Allan, a Navy Public Affairs with the Canadian Armed Forces, said a NATO fleet just outside the territorial waters of the island Jazirt Atta-Ir reported seeing a "catastrophic volcanic eruption" at 7 p.m. local time (1600 GMT) Sunday. The 2-mile-long (3-kilometer-long) island is about 70 miles (115 kilometers) off the coast of Yemen.
"At this time, the entire island is aglow with lava and magma as it pours down into the sea. We do not have confirmation of how many people were on this island at the time of the eruption," Allan said in an e-mail.

What are the island’s names?
The authoritative “Encyclopedia of Volcanoes”, edited by Haraldur Sigurdsson in 2000, refers to this volcano as Djebel Teyr. Most current references are to Jebel al Tair.
“I blame man-made global warming for creating this volcano!”
Correction: Man-made Geological Warming!
Bush’s fault
When you are on a two mile long island it does not take a really big volcanic eruption to screw up your weekend.
I never thought of the Arabian peninsular as being volcanic active. Cool.
Wonder if that ‘belt’ extends up into the Israel/Palestine area?( thinking of the fire and brimstone stories in the Bible)

Thanks. I had no idea. Fascinating read and pics.
A side note,
My son recently showed me an Rx plastic vial filled with ‘sand’.
About the consistency of Gulf Coast beach sand.
I was amazed at the weight compared to the volume. And thought it was a ground up ore of one of the heavier metals.
Turns out it was ash from Mt. St. Helens!
Noticed you are in Ohio. Make the Columbus Air Show last weekend? It was great.
