Christian leaders threaten to abandon Republicans

WASHINGTON – Some of the top leaders in Christian pro-family activism – including James Dobson of Focus on the Family – met in Salt Lake City yesterday to plot a strategy if Rudy Giuliani or another supporter of legalized abortion is nominated by the Republican Party as its presidential candidate.

Not only was there a consensus among activists to withhold support for the Republican nominee, there was even discussion about supporting the entry of a new candidate to challenge the frontrunners.

It's no secret that Dobson, founder of one of the largest Christian ministries in the country, has no use for Giuliani.

In June, he said: "I cannot, and will not, vote for Rudy Giuliani in 2008. It is an irrevocable decision. If given a Hobson's – Dobson's? – choice between him and Sens. Hillary Clinton or Barack Obama, I will either cast my ballot for an also-ran – or if worse comes to worst – not vote in a presidential election for the first time in my adult life. My conscience and my moral convictions will allow me to do nothing else."

Dobson reportedly drove from his headquarters Colorado Springs to the private meeting, held between sessions of the Council for National Policy in Salt Lake City this weekend, just to weigh in with other leaders of family groups, including the Family Research Council, Bott Broadcasting, Capitol Resource Institute, Salem Communications, Eagle Forum and Concerned Women for America

Just remember, when you vote for the lesser of two evils you still get evil.

Just remember, in the real world, when you vote for the lesser of two evil, YOU GET LESS EVIL. Only an evil or naive person would vote, whether by ommision or commision, for more evil.

Any Christian who sees fulfillment in the Republican party or any other earthly kingdom is a heretic.

Well, the Christian is under no illusion that a Republican victory is any better than a Democrat victory, in terms of the Kingdom of God. In that respect, neither are any better than the other.

However, that being said, there are platform issues that one party has which is in accord with certain issues in the Bible and Christianity, and others which are not in accord -- depending on which party and/or candidate you are talking about. And as far as those particular issues are concerned, either you support or reject them, as you come across them, either as a candidate or as a party.

So, when it comes to a candidate who doesn't represent the Biblical position on some point, then you have to oppose it. That is -- reject it as a Christian, as as one who votes. It's not based upon which party should win and which party should lose. You seem to be basing it on which party should win.

That's all it amounts to with a Christian. It's not a matter of whether the Republican party or the Democrat party should win or their proposed candidate should win, or who might win if I don't support this or that candidate.

fully 1/3 of “evangelical Christians” voted for Bill Clinton

A huge majority of those were 'black' evangelical Christians who whored themselves choosing mammon(social welfare largess) over God.

We have been in desperate financial problems for 2 years now and I have prayed for a financial miracle, and others have prayed for us. And last week we received an answer to our prayer. I can’t say thank you enough or praise Gods holy name more. But I know many people who are having a really hard time financially. And hearing politicians taking about putting a 50 cent tax on gasoline is insane. If government employees have great health care at the expense of the American people something needs to be done. Let them pay for their own health insurance. Our insurance gets higher and higher and I suppose the time will come we won’t be able to have it at all.We don’t need social health care but something needs to be done. And let the American companies build in Mexico and give Mexicans jobs in Mexico.

Mine is to keep my family safe #1, period. Dot. Exclamation point. If that requires abortion go on the back burner, I’m all for it. There are no rights for the unborn if there aren’t any people left to “born” them.

From the record of the Bible, which is God's word, that is not the way God thinks about these things. God will make things very unsafe for people and their families and will destroy countries and their so-called security, if they abandon God's principles that He has given them, in place of this so-called security. It has been shown many times, this way, in the Bible with Israel, when they went for "other things" of more importance to them and their families, in place of things which God said were more important.

And so, in that regard, most likely what will happen, if a majority starts thinking the way you are saying, that God will simply bring judgement and/or the very disasters you are talking about preventing, simply because you place certains principles of God at a lower status than other things that you deem more important.

I believe that, certainly, very hard and tough times will happen, and perhaps even more attacks by the enemy and a worse polical climate and/or the worst candidate that one could imagine (perhaps a Hillary...), and it will come about because God will allow people to pursue their own misguided principles to the political situation and He will bring judgement as a result of it.

I guess we'll see..., coming right around the corner in 2008....

I am a CHRISTIAN and have only one leader. The name is JESUS CHRIST (aKa GOD)

While this may very well be true of you and hundreds of thousands (if not millions) of other Christians -- there is one big difference between you and Dobson.

Dobson is recognized to be the "public voice" of millions of Christians, in that what he says does represent the "mindset" of those other millions of Christians (and not that he "calls the shots").

On the other hand -- you simply represent (to the public and to the newspapers and to the other news media) no more than just yourself, and thus, of no importance.

SO..., while you may (or may not) be in the same camp as Dobson on certain political issues (like abortion for example, or many other Christian issues that carry forth to politics) -- it's only Dobson who is quoted and who is "recognized" in the news media, while you are a solitary voice, unable to get your opinions carried forth in any news media of any repute.

Of course, you would think that should be obvious to all the "thinkers" on Free Republic, but who knows...?

“You don’t see a connection between Christianity and Conservatism?”

Perhaps it might be more plain if we said that there is a connection between Christianity and the guiding principles of the Founding Fathers(conservativism)

Thanks for the excellent chart. It shows very clearly why a conservative can't support Rudy with a clear conscience, it's because he's just as much a liberal as the typical Democrat politician, and even more so than some I know of.

I won't vote for Rudy if he's nominated, I will vote 3rd party for the first time in any of the 13 presidential elections in which I will have voted since I became of age in 1958. If my one vote gives the election to Hillary I won't take the blame, the blame will belong to those Repubs who vote for Rudy in the primaries.

Just remember, when you vote for the lesser of two evils you still get evil.

In 1992, I thought the lesser of two evils (Bush or Perot) was Perot so I voted for him. What we got was Clinton. I'm never going to be that stupid again.

Dobson needs to step away from his well founded convictions, and understand this is states rights first, right and wrong second.

He’ll be better able to leverage his resources in the several states anyway.

What percentage of the vote required to elect the President is represented by “the base”?

Conventional wisdom says the base is 25-35%. But that number has a deep reserve that cannot be calculated. If the base turns out, it is because they all agree- and if they all agree they will be augmented by Libertarians, Christian Democrats, and Blue Dog Democrats. That is the magic that the Liberal Democrats cannot beat, that which leads to overwhelming success.

And what is “the base” willing to do to get to 51?

That is simplicity in itself. Give them someone to vote FOR.

Rudy is the only one of the candidates who supports abortion. I am not sure about Paul.

The Whig Party ended over the highly moral issue of slavery. Out of the Whigs came the Republicans. (Lincoln started as a Whig.) Perhaps it is time for a new party to be given birth over another highly moral issue: abortion.

The question is what is the base? The GOP certainly doesn't The GOP certainly doesn't consider Conservatives the base since they have already abandon Conservative principles.

In my estimation, revolution happens in the party when Conservatives gain control. Thereafter, bit by bit, our representatives' resolve is eroded by lobbyists and business concerns, and the never ending desire to make it bigger, better, faster, stronger. In their quest to wield power, they sacrifice the one thing they need to truly retain power- They sacrifice their principles. Soon the Rockefeller wing takes power... Business without conscience. In order to consolidate position, they loft RINO candidates. As the base grows less enamored, the vote gets tighter till control slips away and is lost until another conservative coup... And so it goes.

This time however, I believe things are dangerously different. Our businesses have grown beyond our borders and have become a global entity in their own right. Their involvement with Socialist China and Europe have given them pause- They have subscribed to "new" ideas that are definitely un-American.

They have long desired to shear away the limiting bonds of conscience the Conservative Right have imposed upon them, and are now actively seeking to do so using the compromise with Socialism forged and proven in the successes of Hong Kong.

Big Business has never been our ally, and has now found a way to loosen it's chaffing collar and throw off it's leash. If we do not recognize that fact and work to defy it, it will surely break free of all control and conscience.

The Rockefeller wing must be subdued. They must be forced to cede power, and conservatives must win the day. Once in power we must fight tooth and nail to preserve our sovereignty and restore our country to it's proper course. To elect a RINO is exactly the same thing as electing a Liberal Democrat. We fail to recognize that at our peril, and ensure our doom to do otherwise.

if we can’t pull together in this election then conservatism will suffer a set back that will take years to get over.

I like James Dobson, but if is the leader of a group that puts Hillery in office, I will pray fervently that the Lord punishes him just as he did Dives in today’s Gospel proclamation. Christian conservatives should give Dobson a fight on this. Give him hell!!!!
