All Canadian products will become more expensive for Americans to buy; all American products will become less expensive for Canadians to buy.

"friendly Saudis, Emirates and Japan which receive payment in American currency and obligingly keep the proceeds in dollars. They have taken a monstrous haircut in value of late and there is talk of earmarking some reserves in euros."

They're taking a bath with oil at $82? I don't think so.

After 25 years of decline, long rates are headed back up.

We are witnessing the end of an era.

What a fascinating theory!

If the dollar stays low for long it will be profitable to move to coal-gasification and other forms of energy that have in the past been too expensive.

After the start-up costs have been paid the manufacturing costs will be lower and even a drop in ME oil price will not make us move back to dependence on them.

Putin wants to force the use of euros as a reserve currency instead of dollars for oil and other transactions, then eventually the ruble.==

So what? Russia has to do anything in her interests which brings her more profits. Going to Euros profits her more since the major trade partner of russia is EU zone. SO it is completely sane to switch to Euros for her.
