After reporting sluggish progress last month, U.S. officials announce that the stretch of barriers has grown to 145 miles.
...Whether the new fencing slows illegal immigration remains to be seen, but the project is a milestone in another way. Once limited mainly to cities, fencing along the 1,952-mile border is now going up in rural areas, where much of the illegal immigration traffic has shifted in recent years.
Fleets of tractor-trailers loaded with fence posts and steel tubing have been crossing remote highways and deserts. Crews of National Guard troops spend hours welding raw materials under tarps. In some areas, contractors are installing the barriers at a pace of about half a mile per day.
A line of towering steel now slices for about 32 miles through a sea of sand from San Luis to the Tinajas Altas mountains. The fence, built to prevent incursions on the Barry M. Goldwater Range, is now the longest on the border, more than twice as long as the 14-mile fence separating San Diego from Tijuana.
"This is going to be a rude awakening for the crowds [of immigrants] that come in the fall," said Welby Redwine, a Boeing Co. engineer overseeing work in a canyon crisscrossed by smuggling trails in the Tinajas Altas mountains, 40 miles from the nearest town. "When they see it they're going to say, 'Wow, what happened?' "

“What are you, nine years old? Does that debate technique work for you in grade school?”
Ok, sorry. A large portion of people here did that.
Better?
It is Washington. Things do not happen overnight. Sometimes they do not happen at all.
This was a great win for America. Hopefully one of many more to come.
The President spent almost 7 years taking hits from everyone. Sorry, not everyone. That would be a 9th grade debating technique. :)
Who benefitted from the President taking these hits? Conservatives. Who benefitted from Harriet Miers? Conservatives? Whenever there was a chance that we would fracture, the President did something we would perceive as “stupid” and we would come together. Time and time again. In 2006 we didn’t and rightfully so. We sent a message to the RNC that unless they put up Conservative candidates, we are going to vote our issues. Issues that we won the day on.
For four years the President was a “Strategerist” and Rove was an “Evil Genius.” And all of a sudden the President gets Stupid? He is in his second term, cannot run for reelection, has an obstructionist and spend happy congress to deal with, his party is coming apart at the seems and all that is left is a Conservative base that has been tasked by God to save this country.
How do you hold that base together if you are a leader? Herb Brooks did it by having his 1980 Olympic Hockey Team team come together and collectively hate him. As did the USA hockey management. But Herb won.
Leadership. Leaders make mistakes because leaders have to make decisions. Some are good decisions, some are bad. But they make them and there is always a reason behind why. We don’t know Bush’s reasons.
Guess we will have to wait a few years and for the book to come out.
Give us a link to one of those people who did all that, exactly as you claimed.
I call BS on your claim.
It'll take more than wire cutters for this barrier. More like heavy industrial equipment such as cutting torches. That's why it will ultimately be a double fence: sensors will detect activity and before the second barrier can be breached, agents will arrive to apprehend the people. A barrier by itself can't prevent entry, but it can slow people down enough to make avoiding detection and apprehension very difficult.
Only one thing will stop the illegal invasion: landmines.
They promised us this
With variations of this
Yet This is what we are getting??????
Once again Americans have been had Again.
You make it sound as if the President has no responsibility for the illegal alian situation and that everyone who has slammed him for his active support for the invaders(amnesty) and his total inaction on the border are being too harsh.
Kind of a stupid position to take given all of his actions or inaction on this issue.
So they’ve built 70 miles of the 854 mile project?
Shouldn’t the headline read “Only 8% of Border Fence Completed”?
I’m glad to hear the barriers are more robust than I feared. I’m glad that they are actually going up!
The fence, according to Hunter’s bill, is supposed to be a double fence with a road in between, exactly like the one he built in San Diego. Is that what you are reporting seeing?
How about taking six years to get around to enforcing the law?
Thanks for posting that.
Geeeeez .. I though they’d already blamed Bush for everything else .. ROTFLOL!!
Funny .. they haven’t blamed him for VICTORY IN IRAQ .. now that we’re really making progress .. and did everybody know that we and the Afghans killed about 260 of the Taliban last week .. I didn’t think the drive-by mentioned it.
A vehicle-proof barrier now lines the south side of Interstate 8 at the Imperial Dunes, a short distance north of the U.S.-Mexico border, west of Winterhaven, Calif.
The progress marks an abrupt turnaround from one month ago, when the Homeland Security Department reported having completed only 15 of the 70 miles promised by Sept. 30, drawing criticism from many Republicans and activists against illegal immigration.
That would mean that the month of September certainly represented significant progress in establishing a fence.
For what it is worth, I think that this article was written completely backwards. I would have have started with this paragraph:
The number of illegal immigrants apprehended daily in the area has dropped from 800 to as low as 15, according to Border Patrol officials.
That's the most important part to me: the fence has grown a lot in the last month, and borderjumpers have decreased radically in that period.
I can only see one side of it so I can’t say about the road but it is different than any picture I have see. It is 4x4 or 6x6 square tubing. Think a picket fence made of steel.
It’s not a double fence?
You have a digital camera?....
Well at least we now see what part of the problem is with the dedicated koolaid drinkers: six years of resistance to doing his job of enforcing the border is "one day" and "a week".
Are the workers legal for this section of the fence?
