Don't Let the Media Divide Our Movement (Must Read!)
Focus on the Family ^ | September 28, 2007 | Gary Schneeberger, Vice President

Posted on 09/28/2007 7:02:11 PM PDT by 2ndDivisionVet

Dear Friends,

You have probably heard at least a little bit in the past several days about Dr. James Dobson’s comments regarding presidential candidate Fred Thompson. It is true that Dr. Dobson, as a private citizen in an e-mail to friends, raised questions about former Sen. Thompson’s suitability to be president. What has not been true, in the days that have followed, is the media’s attempt to paint the incident as World War III among socially conservative Christians.

Do some other evangelical leaders disagree with Dr. Dobson’s opinion about Sen. Thompson? Yes. But that is hardly uncommon in the realm of politics — good people, who share common values, can come to different conclusions about which candidate best represents their interests. Yet some in the media have done more than simply report there is friendly disagreement between Dr. Dobson and some of his long-time allies — they’ve tried to make a mountain out of what doesn’t even merit molehill status.

The latest example came in this morning’s Washington Times, in which a reporter, while claiming social conservatives had become “splintered” over whom to support in the race for the White House, attributed remarks very critical of Dr. Dobson to his friend of two decades, Gary Bauer. Mr. Bauer has flatly denied saying these harsh things — taking to the radio, issuing a news release and writing his own e-mail to friends to explain how he was misquoted. The reporter who wrote the story has acknowledged his mistake — and a formal correction appears to be in the offing.

I write to clarify these matters, not to say that everyone in the pro-family movement agrees about the viability of Sen. Thompson’s candidacy. I write merely to say, as we have unfortunately had to say many times in the past, that you shouldn’t believe everything you read, see or hear about this matter in the mainstream media. Their agenda is to undermine our movement by suggesting it is being torn apart, when nothing could be further from the truth. We’re merely doing what all Americans should do when faced with a decision as monumental as who will be our next president: carefully and prayerfully discussing who deserves our votes.

Thank you for your continued partnership with Focus on the Family Action.

Yah, social conservatives, or Christian Republicans, or the religious right or whatever label you want to apply are about 20% or 30% of the country. If they all get behind one candidate that’s a miracle. If the majority of them get behind a candidate, that candidate likely wins the Republican nomination. There are too many millions of people to not have disagreements about what candidate is best. It’s like saying that the left is fractured because some support Obama and Edwards, while others support Hillary. Just silly.

The lesson: Don't believe everything anything you see & hear in the media.

Reporters are in general the dumbest of the dumb ... incapable of distinguishing night from day, yes from no, etc. I have several times in my life witnessed events with reporters present and invariably they are incapable of getting the story right - usually exactly wrong.

The only person I believe is heatedly against Thompson is Dobson. I’ve never thought otherwise. And my problem with Dobson isn’t his opinion on Thompson, even if I disagree, but that I think he has a person he has pledged support to and he’s not being honest in that respect by admitting it.

As to the “movement”, I’m pretty sure they are against Rudy and McCain. My impression is that they are leaning toward Thompson, though taking their time evaluating him. A few are for Romney.

The media can write what ever they want, but as a social conservative I do follow these organizations and leaders faily closely and the idea civil war broke out or Thompson was being spit out was ludricrous at face value.

The media is the media, but lets not act naive. Lets see this for what it was.

For the second time since March, Dobson questioned a fellow Christians faith. Not to mention Fred`s integrity and veracity. This was meant to damage Thompson`s campaign and to set up a possible run by Newt Gingrich. Beyond the pale and frankly, off the wall.

The media aren't so much dumb as they are manipulative, agendized, communism-spinning pieces of crud.

Gary Schneeberger, why not identify The Washington Times reporter?

Focus on the misrepresenter, misquoter, embellisher, LIAR.
Focus on their agenda, lack of training, morals, other articles.

The bond that hold us together is our integrity, honesty, fellowship, goodwill.

After an attack we identity the attacker, to alert other innocent individuals so that they are not easy prey.

Focus on the family of men and women who exhibit goodwill toward each other.

Truth, freedom, life.

Personally I think Dobson is reaping what he has sown and Focus on the Family has been sullied by their leader's actions. It's not just that Dobson is against Thompson, but the pretentious way he questioned his faith reveals a man who does not practice the Christianity he preaches.

The press only reported what Dobson "leaked". It has been reported that this is all merely a tactic to make it easier for the Christian right to support Gingrich whom Dobson backs. If this is true, it also reveals Dobson as a fool. People are sick of personal attacks and Dobsons remarks have backfired not only against him and Focus on the Family but the MSM is using it against the Christian right and Republicans in general.

Good job Dobson, if Hillary prays I'm sure she's praying for more of the same from you and your ilk..

No. They are dumb. Being dumb, they are easily manipulated and agendized into being communist-spinning pieces of crud. ... but they are still dumb.

case in point: even the vaunted Dan Rather is simply too dumb to recognize one of the most obvious forgeries to ever be produced (I daresay even more obvious than school child's forgery of a note from their parents). Even those who reach the top of that profession shouldn't be allowed to cross the street on their own.

It would be an insult to posts to say they are collectively as dumb as a post.

There is no doubt what Dr. Dobson said and meant in his “private” email to his friends; he was genuinely casting doubt on Thompson’s positions. I see this release by FOTF as a way of quelling the storm it provoked, since they now see there is a very large change of finding FT in the White House. FOTF is a wonderful organization - I just wish Dobson would stay within the area of his expertise.

I figure that Rather didn’t WANT to discover the forgery. In his maniacal delight, he probably would have gouged out his eyes in order to NOT see it for what it was.

That being said, I'm sure you're correct about their stupidity. I hope that they're lemmings instead of sheep.

He’s a front man for Newt Gingrich, from what I’ve heard...which is funny, because it came out today that Newt’s not running!! LOL Guess Jim will have to crawl to Fred and ask to be on the team.
