Russia promises retaliation if weapons deployed in space
Novosti ^

MOSCOW, September 27 (RIA Novosti) - Russia is ready to take appropriate measures if weapons are deployed in space, the commander of the Russian Space Forces said Thursday.

"Should any country deploy weapons in space, then the laws of armed warfare are such that retaliatory weapons are certain to appear," Col. Gen. Vladimir Popovkin said.

He said Russia and China have drafted an international declaration on the non-deployment of weapons in space and sent it to the UN.

"It is necessary to establish the rules of the game in space," he said, adding that the deployment of weapons in space could have unpredictable consequences, since such weapons are "very complex systems."

"A sizable war could break out," the commander said.

He said space must not be the sphere of interests of any one country.

"We do not want to fight in space, and we do not want to call the shots there either, but we will not permit any other country to do so," he said.

Popovkin also said that Russia has an integrated missile attack warning system, covering the country's entire territory.

The Russian Space Forces? Does this mean we'll have to compete by arming NASA? Please, Lord, NO!:)

Seriously, who goosed that Russian's butt? He almost sounds like one of crazy Iranians.

Got to take the Moon now. USA only. Every dictate and fiber of history and humanity screams that at us.

I find it interesting that he is worried about 'retaliatory' weapons rather than 'first strike' weapons. Retaliatory implies that he doesn't want someone (the U.S.A) to be able to respond to an attack.

We need to have weapons in space and the US should be there first. The Chinese and the Russians know that whoever controls near earth space will control the future of this planet.

A military presence in space has the long term benefit of providing an impetus to develop the foundation technologies that will make the expansion of human civilization throughout the solar system and the universe a possibility.

Also we need to have systems in place to address probable external threats because what can most certainly wipe us out are near earth asteroids.

I just read your FR page, and it's very interesting.

About the moon, you do know that earth real estate values are down, even in California, and the moon market isn't quite feasible for strip malls and subdivisions anytime soon. However if you would like to get in while the moon lot prices are dirt cheap, I have a Nigerian acquaintance that would like to explain the opportunities to you.

I just read your strip mall/real estate/Nigeria comment and it's very uninteresting.

The old FOBS argument.

This cat musta read the Popular Mechnics magazine on the deployable ‘rods of god’ system.

Russia is more than able to send enough nukes our way to cause a classic EOTWAWKI situation.

Thanks, I’d rather not play that right now, thanks very much.

You should be talking to the Chinese, Vlad. Besides, do you really want to try to outspend us again?

I’ve been suspicious for years (long before “Space Cowboys”) that the Soviets had slipped a FOBS satellite into orbit. Even if the DOD knew about it, the ramifications of it being up there would cause panic if the public was informed.
