Dan Rather stands by his story
Salon.COM ^ | 9/27/07 | Sidney Blumenthal

His lawsuit will attempt to show that CBS tried to suppress the report on Bush's National Guard Service and the Abu Ghraib abuses.

By Sidney Blumenthal

Dan Rather's complaint against CBS and Viacom, its parent company, filed in New York state court on Sept. 19 and seeking $70 million in damages for his wrongful dismissal as "CBS Evening News" anchor, has aroused hoots of derision from a host of commentators. They've said that the former anchor is "sad," "pathetic," "a loser," on an "ego" trip and engaged in a mad gesture "no sane person" would do, and that "no one in his right mind would keep insisting that those phony documents are real and that the Bush National Guard story is true."

Once the court accepts his suit, however, launching the adjudication of legal issues such as breach of fiduciary duty and tortious interference with contract, it will set in motion an inexorable mechanism that will grind out answers to other questions as well. Then Rather's suit will become an extraordinary commission of inquiry into a major news organization's intimidation, complicity and corruption under the Bush administration. No congressional committee would be able to penetrate into the sanctum of any news organization to divulge its inner workings. But intent on vindicating his reputation, capable of financing an expensive legal challenge, and armed with the power of subpoena, Rather will charge his attorneys to interrogate news executives and perhaps administration officials under oath on a secret and sordid chapter of the Bush presidency.

Rather is a pathetic loser...and always was. Given that Walter Cronkite was a tough act to follow, shallow Dan had enough time to make his own mark in the world of news journalism...and he did. Dead ass last every year in the network TV news business. Now he’s becoming even a bigger jerk by trying to prove he wasn’t a jerk in the first place. Still a pitiful jerk...and EVERYBODY knows it!!!

Wow “Sid the Sleeze” rears his head again. I had wondered where that Clintoid was hiding out. Hard to knows who is more of a slime: Blumenthal or Ickies?

Sid be attempting miracle writing these days if he is actually trying to resurect Dan Rather’s reputation.

Any fool could see those documents were fake. All I did was point out the obvious.

Please, please, somebody take my deposition.

What is Dan’s story today?

Did he get another e-mail on Lotus Notes 1973?

Why he is saying "They were never proven fake" is unreal. Even the Selectric could'nt do proportional spacing. He is trying to save his name and blames his contemporaries with not doing the fact checking. The funny thing is he still claims the documents are "accurate". Well Mr. Rather give me the originals (if they exist)!

Good Job Sir!

Mmmm, Sid...If CBS was looking to suppress Rather’s report, they picked an extremely strange way to do it. They broadcast the report. In prime time, even. They released the documents. Put them on the Web, even. That the story fell apart once the public got hold of it is not really CBS’ fault. Well, at least not in the sense that Dan can sue them for it. Just a thought, both to Dan and Mary Mapes in particular and to CBS News in general: Maybe y’all should banish from your vocabularies the phrase “too good to check”.

And the idea that Abu Ghraib got suppressed by any major media outlet, much less CBS...Sid’s on crack.

When I was in Catholic high school in Queens (part of the Brooklyn Diocese), Cardinal Spellman died. We got a day off so the Brothers could attend the funeral. In Catholic high school black humor we immediately began to chant in stage whispers, “Go McEntegart (Bishop of Brooklyn), go!”

Looks like the DIM’s aren’t getting the donations they had hoped for. They had to dust off the “Rather Absurd” to try to get the rage up for those last minute donations. Yep, they are puking all the key words to get the vitriol going and the wallets open.
