people fish in this exact same way in Hawwaii today .
However they use battery powered lights , not fire...
same effect , the fish are drawn up to the light .

We do it in Florida, too.........Flounder gigging at night is a big thang!............

In the South and Midwest, too. Folks rig up car headlights in floating collars (styrofoam or similar), put them out over the side of the boat at night, and dunk minnows for white bass.
