Hope fades for passage of bill to aid young illegal immigrants [DREAM Act]
Houston Chronicle ^ | September 26, 2007 | Michelle Mittelstadt

WASHINGTON — The hope for immediate Senate action on the DREAM Act, which would grant legal status to hundreds of thousands of young illegal immigrants, faded Tuesday as the measure's chief Senate sponsor acknowledged he was having difficulty surmounting Republican opposition.

Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., has been seeking to attach the DREAM Act to the defense authorization bill pending in the Senate. But in an interview Tuesday, he said the DREAM Act isn't among the items on the table as Republican and Democratic leaders discuss ways to quickly wrap up debate on the defense bill.

"We haven't given up completely, but the options on this bill are limited,'' Durbin said.

"I'm disappointed for thousands of young people whose lives are just in limbo," he added. "They want to move on with their lives and do good things, and unfortunately we haven't been able to pass the laws to make that happen."

Immigrant-rights advocates were dismayed by the setback but vowed to find other means to pass the legislation, which they have sought since 2001.

"There is no question that this issue doesn't stop here," said Cecilia Muñoz, senior vice president of the National Council of La Raza. "The longer we wait, the more talented young people we close the door of opportunity to."

The DREAM Act would allow illegal immigrants who entered the U.S. before the age of 16, and have lived here at least five years, to receive conditional legal status if they have graduated from high school and have a clean record. After six years, they could become permanent legal residents if they serve in the U.S. military for at least two years or complete at least two years of college. As with most green card holders, they could apply for citizenship after five years.

I'll keep an eye out for you. I'm mostly away from the PC Saturday and Sunday (Saturday especially) so don't do much, but I'll keep you in mind. Have a great camping weekend.

WHY? You answered it in the next 2 paragraphs :-)

And that was my intent. As has been common practice on FR for a long time, I included an italicized excerpt from the post that I was responding to. That excerpt contained the question, why, as posed by the originating poster.

Repeating relevant segments from original posts makes it easier for readers to follow the discussion without having to constantly move around within a thread. Italicizing the excerpt makes it easy for the reader to distinguish it from the new comments. I hope that this clarifies the matter. :-)

For those who do not know how to italicize and otherwise format text, it's easy to do and easy to learn. On need only spend a few minutes in the HTML Sandbox.

Typical liberal wording of a bill: "Dream Act". As in, "who could vote against a dream?" Oh brother. It should be called the "Screw the Taxpayers Act".

The Republicans in the House that voted for this should be run out of office. The idiots think that's the kind of pandering stuff that will help them get reelected and they're big-time wrong.

Many thanks for expressing our current situation so clearly and accurately!!! How do you think we can save the USA? I am really wondering if it just wont get worse [i.e. Hellary] and the huge 50% or so of Americans mostly on the coasts seem to not care at all! It is hard to keep on trucking [no pun intended] but of course as Christians we do persevere. But what can we do without a leader at least as coherent and skilled as Newt Gingrich??

Well now! I think that is just great that they want to move on.

I suggest they move on BACK TO MEXICO.

No Citizen gets the breaks these illegals are getting. Hey Sam, do you work for the U.S. Citizens or for the illegals? A Rapid solution for their problem would be to send them back to Mexico.

From Numbers USA:

Dear [This fax will go to Your two U.S. Senators ]

Please do not attach any amnesty amendments to the Department of Defense authorization bill.

I am especially concerned about Amendment 2237, which would attach the DREAM Act to the bill. The DREAM Act is a loophole-ridden amnesty that would grant legal status to almost any illegal alien who applied for it.

On its surface, the DREAM Act would provide amnesty to illegal aliens who entered the United States before the age of 16 and grant them in-state tuition. At the very least, these provisions give preferential treatment to students who shouldn't even be in the country over our own young people - many of whom will struggle to afford higher education.

But that is not all that is wrong with the DREAM Act. The bill was written in such a way that there is no upper age limit and very little burden of proof placed on the applicant. A 45-year-old illegal alien who had entered the country less than a year ago could game the system by simply walking into a U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services office and providing a sworn statement that he had been in the country since before he was 16. Thus, this is an invitation for just about every illegal alien to fraudulently claim the amnesty.

Furthermore, DREAM amnesty citizens over 21 years of age will be able to petition for their parents - the very people who broke the law to bring them into the country in the first place. The chief criminals will be rewarded after all.

This is a perfect example of the slippery slope of amnesty. Once you start rewarding some law-breakers, you end up rewarding them all.

Please oppose any and all amnesty amendments to the DoD authorization bill.

Sincerely, [Your Name Will Appear Here]

(Numbers USA FAX CENTER)

From NumbersUsA:

(September 27) Yesterday, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid announced that the DREAM Act would not be considered as an amendment to H.R. 1585, the Defense Department authorization bill for fiscal year 2008. The Washington Times reports, however, that Reid will again push for passage of the DREAM Act, which would grant amnesty to millions of illegal aliens, by different means (possibly in its stand-alone form [S. 774, sponsored by Assistant Majority Leader Dick Durbin {D-Ill.}]) before the Senate adjourns for the year (i.e., on or about November 16).

This fight aint over yet! Look for the hydra to sprout another head within the next month.

Has the 5 mil bill for 08 passed ?!?!?!

That amount is the tip of the iceberg---I hear it's more like $50 million per year.

PLUS God knows how many "earmarks" these people pocket from suckups like Teddy and the rest of the hyphenate sluts in Congress.

PLUS handouts from numerous govt agencies like Dept of Education

You need to ask your Cong to request the GAO to compile a complete report on LA Raza's total take from the US govt.

You pose a lot of good questions. Let me pose one more...
“The DREAM Act would allow illegal immigrants who entered the U.S. before the age of 16, and have lived here at least five years, to receive conditional legal status if they have graduated from high school and have a clean record.”

How can an illegal immigrant have a clean record???????
