Republicans from Lincoln to Reagan have belived in free labor and free opportunity. Democrats from Jefferson Davis To Sharpton have believed in division for the benefit of the non-productive. But that doesn't stop leftist conventional thought from trying to turn Lincoln into some sort of 19th century FDR.

Wasn’t Mary Todd Lincoln a little nuts? Sally Field is a good choice for the part then.

Neeson is not a good choice vocally. Lincoln had a high-pitched, squeaky voice with certain vocal mannerisms from the frontier. His contemporaries compared his voice to a tenor trumpet.

Vocally, if he were still alive, Walter Brennan would have been perfect for the role, even though he was too short and stumpy to play Lincoln physically.

There has to be a tall high tenor out there who can act.

I won't watch anything with her in it. She is way over-exposed. Her osteoporosis commercial has me reaching for the remote every time I see it (haven't listened to it yet, since I mute the commercials). And her recent insanity at the Emmys (which I didn't watch, but saw replayed on the news, and heard on Savage) only hardens my resolve.

Same problem with over-exposure for the guy who played President Palmer on '24'. He now does auto insurance commercials (or something like that). I have to reach for the remote so that my enjoyment (and memory) of '24' isn't ruined.

The liberals can have Lincoln. He was a liberal and proud of it. And anyone thinking that he freed the slaves is an idiot. Lincoln only freed the slaves in the states that left the union. There were several states that the emancipation did not cover.
Of course, lincoln loved the United States, something no present day liberal will do.

(Watch out for liberals trying to steal a Republican Hero)

After reading the tone of FR posts in recent years, I thought we had already kicked Lincoln out, anyway. ;)

Sally Field has been cast as Mary Todd Lincoln

Hmm, will she be as good as Mary Tyler Moore?

‘Sally Field has been cast as Mary Todd Lincoln, the wife of Abraham Lincoln, in Steven Spielberg’s long-awaited biopic of one of the most important leaders of all time.’

The irony is Mary Todd Lincoln was institutionalized for being stark raving insane....which would have been Sally Field’s fate back then, based on her hysterics....(chuckle)

Poor Gidget.

Type-casting?? Mary Todd Lincoln went from nutty opportunist before the Civil War to just plain nuts after the assassination. [of course, having your spouse murdered right next to you like that could drive almost anyone over the edge]

From what I understand about the woman she was very difficult to live with throughout their lives together and made Abe Lincoln miserable. But he managed to suck it up, become stronger than ever, just as he did from the very very serious depression he suffered in his 20s (the real love of his life died young, and it shattered him for awhile), before he even knew her. He became an immense figure in the face of much personal misery and then of course the national agonies of the civil war. I have never understood Mary Todd Lincoln to be anything but a rather unsympathetic figure, but I would be happy to be corrected.

Sally Field has been cast as Mary Todd Lincoln, the wife of Abraham Lincoln, in Steven Spielberg's long-awaited biopic of one of the most important leaders of all time.

Inspired casting. Mary Todd Lincoln was driven to insanity. She was even described as a "hell-cat." Poor woman.

Liam Neeson? All I can think of is that stupid lion he played in The Chronicles of Narnia.

Maybe they're going for a certain gawkiness, and I guess he has that.

Tom Hanks is supposed to be a relative of Lincoln's mother (Nancy Hanks), but I'm glad he didn't get the part.

After Big and Forrest Gump to be portrayed by Hanks is no great honor.

Sally Field? Whatever ...

Not as inspired as casting Mary Tyler Moore as Mary Todd Lincoln though ...

I can’t disagree with the basic idea of your post, Colonel. But if you’d left off the shot at Jefferson Davis you’d have had a better thread.

Hollywood will depict Lincoln as a left-wing Democrat until such time as he’s no longer needed by the forces trying to re-write our history. Then they’ll depict him as just another racist, imperialist, sexist white guy who failed to be as liberal as the contemporary Democrat platform.

It may have to wait until her summer hiatuswell, she is getting kind of old, so I'm not surprised she only has one hiatus per season rather than one per month...

Woman used to complain about not working on movies after 50. She has been working almost as much as she did when she was a teenager lately. I guess she does not have to worry about lack of movie parts.

Actually Lincoln was not interested in the plight of those in slavery at all during most of his life until the Civil War and then only as a matter of political expediency.
He is overrated and don’t forget he suspended as many of the Bill of Rights was possible including Habeas Corpus.
He wasn't a Reagan Republican.
