Less than half of military votes overseas counted

Election commission: 57,000 ballots were cast in ’06

WASHINGTON — Overseas military voters had less than half of their votes counted in last year’s congressional elections, according to data released by the U.S. Election Assistance Commission on Monday.

“One thing is clear: At every level of government, we need to do a better job,” said Donetta Davidson, chair of the commission. “We must make sure all eligible voters are getting their opportunities.”

The figures, released at the commission’s annual conference on ways to improve and troubleshoot the absentee voting process, showed that only about 992,000 of the nearly 6 million eligible overseas citizens requested ballots for the 2006 general election.

That included about 119,000 military personnel stationed outside the United States. Of those, only about 57,000 — less than 48 percent — had their votes successfully cast or counted.

EAC officials said that’s roughly the same percentage that were counted for expatriates and domestic military filing absentee ballots. The major failures were on the ballot delivery side, with about 72 percent of those who failed to vote never receiving any of their requested election materials.

What kind of pansy-assed response is that? There should be outrage!

That definitely cost the Senate, maybe the House too.

If true...this is more than a disgrace and travesty...its treasonous. The Left convieniently allows illegals to vote, imprisoned felons and dead democrats to make the polls, but refuses to accept overseas miltary votes as valid. May a camel $h*te in their water hole!

Misleading.

Because it is so labor intensive to count absentee ballots, they usually aren’t counted unless the election is close. If you have 5,000 absentee ballots in a stack, and one candidate is ahead by 6,000 votes, counting the absentee ballots will not change the outcome of the election, and cost the taxpayers money.

I was stationed at Spangdahlem, AB, Germany when I was first eligible to vote.

There a Chief Master Sergeant (E-9) who spoke to me in the hallway one day and let me know it was my civil duty as an American to vote.

I respected him and voted, mostly because I was afraid he’d find out if I didn’t. I was just 19 and proudly cast my vote for President Ronald Wilson Reagan (1984).

"That definitely cost the Senate, maybe the House too."

I live in Florida, and I know how hard the 'RATS tried to shut down the military vote in the 2000 election, and since.

It conveniently gives a lying t*rd like Al Gore Junior the ability to proclaim that he “won” the 2000 popular vote (by a 0.51% margin).

Even in Florida where the 3000 contested military ballots were approved by the Florida Supreme Court, they were not included in Katherine Harris’ submitted tally (she held to her earlier figure).

Translation: two Senate seats that went to Dems were really won by Pubbies and the Senate should still be Republican. But then, when you know the opposition has no balls, you can do what you want.

Nothing personal. I respectfully disagree with this practice. Sorry, I don't care if it cost the government huge dollars to count that vote. Count it! If they can spend a million on some lefty's wet dream in Berkley CA, they can count a serviceman's vote from Iraq, regardless of the outcome. Talk about a discouraging position to place the overseas voter in..."if it's close...you don't matter". Why vote then?

Another leftist policy.

Been screaming about this for years.

E.G. "The Hanging Chads of Florida." Did no one happen to notice that all those military voters who make Florida their home were disenfranchised byt the Democrats ... and rather neatly. Ditto, the State of Washington?

When are the Republicans going to wake up to vote fraud on an official basis? The last two national elections were examples of fraud beyond belief in at least 6 states.

Maybe "Beyond Belief" is the problem. (Although God knows what beliefs the RNC actually has, or if they have any thoughts.)

When’s the last time you voted and only got to choose one race or initiative? Wouldn’t that stink not to get to help defeat a relatively minor bond initiative you may care a lot about because your ballot got tossed because your Congressman gets elected by 20% margins?

And, our side does WHAT to stop this? They don't even talk about it anywhere.

Our side sucks in getting the word out or refuting the lies and illegalities of the left.

Conservative politicos have been far too political and far less conservative. They are a far cry from Ronald Reagan.
