WASHINGTON (MCT) -- In the latest sign of how unsettled the Republican presidential race is, Newt Gingrich says he'll run if supporters come up with $30 million in three weeks.
"I don't see as a citizen how you could turn that down," Gingrich said on "Fox News Sunday."
The fiery and controversial former speaker of the House has been a polarizing public figure.
Still, he believes he can mount a White House bid just a few months before voting starts because the GOP faithful have yet to solidify behind a candidate. Rudy Giuliani remains the leader, at 30 percent in the latest Gallup Poll, just 8 percentage points ahead of already-stumbling actor Fred Thompson.
Gingrich has tasked longtime adviser Randy Evans with launching the ambitious fundraising bid next Monday, and reporting back in three weeks.
"I want the commitments first," Gingrich said. "If there is, in fact, enough people in the country who think we need this kind of approach and this kind of change-oriented policies, then I think I'd feel a responsibility to run."
Gingrich isn't the only potential candidate whose name is still in play. Sen. Chuck Hagel, R-Neb., said New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg shouldn't be written off, because the terrain remains so unsettled.
"This business is full of uncertainties," Hagel said on CNN's "Late Edition."
Well, you can't accuse Gingrich of not being specific enough, but I wonder if Chuck Hagel realizes Bloomberg isn't a even a RINO any more.
Newt, you want my medical records electronically??? You and your pal Billary Clinton??? Take hike.
Newt said this a week ago. He knows it won’t happen.
Newt is so yesterday, still displaying the arrogance that made him loved and admired.
Ron Paul _promised_ he’d raise $50 million. I’m not sure who is more delusional.
Forget it Newt. No one thinks you can win.
Already stumbling Fred Thompson?
The Leftist Media is delusional.
The Fred Thompson steamroll is powering forward, and is unstoppable right up to the White House steps and through the front doors.
The ScuMedia are desperately looking for 2008’s Ross Perot to help split the GOP vote.
Ron Paul. Newt. Pat Buchanan. ANYBODY!
Don't be too sure. I'd bet that Hillary could find some creative ways of funding his campaign. I doubt he'd have a chance at the nomination, but he could dilute the conservative vote enough to let her face Giuliani in the general election.
Quick! Everyone donate to someone else!
Nononononononononono....
What an ego Gingrich has.
The “Fred stumbling” B.S. is the media trying its best to stop a steam roller.
Newt stands as much chance of being POTUS as I do.
Now what did I do with my popcorn popper??????
Facing Giuliani gets her beat.
The others...I’m not so sure about.
Hey Newt call someone who cares........ maybe Dobson...
Um, hey,Newt, do you recall asking us if we wanted you? I don’t...
I hope he gets his money and runs and shakes all these first tier clowns out of their loafers. (I have no trust for any of those dudes.)
We need a good hurricane to get the show on the road and force these whatever to show their real hand. After that, we can then get down to real business.
I thought that, too - I don’t see Fred as “stumbling” at all, he’s more “uniting”. The MSM wants a bloody GOP primary, anybody can reason why.
