Candidate (Duncan Hunter) Threatens Federal Money Over Ahmadinejad Columbia Speech
ABC NEWS ^ | 24 SEPT 2007 | Byron Wolf

Posted on 09/24/2007 10:14:15 AM PDT by radar101

Duncan Hunter, the Congressman from California, joined other Republican Presidential candidates over the weekend in condemning the upcoming address to Columbia University by Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

But Hunter went a step further by pledging that if the speech goes forth he will introduce legislation in Congress to cut off federal assistance from the University. All federal assistance. This would presumably include research and scientific grants for the sciences and medical school.

"If the left-wingers of academia will not support our troops, they, in the very least, should not support our adversaries," Hunter said in a statement accompanying a warning letter he wrote to Lee Bollinger, the president of Columbia.

Bollinger has tried to meet the mounting criticism from Republican politicians head-on.

In a statement on the school's website on September 19th, Bollinger announced that he would introduce the Iranian President with a rebuke to Iran's treatment of women and its stance toward Israel and Ahmadinejad's denial of the Holocaust.

Bollinter went on to say in the statement that hearing all ideas, no matter how "odious" is one of the basic tenets of a full education.

"I would also like to invoke a major theme in the development of freedom of speech as a central value in our society," Bollinger wrote. "It should never be thought that merely to listen to ideas we deplore in any way implies our endorsement of those ideas, or the weakness of our resolve to resist those ideas or our naiveté about the very real dangers inherent in such ideas. It is a critical premise of freedom of speech that we do not honor the dishonorable when we open the public forum to their voices. To hold otherwise would make vigorous debate impossible."

The threat of cutting off federal funds is something the government and Congress have used before when law schools tried to keep JAG lawyers from recruiting on campuses because the military's "Don't Ask Don't Tell" policy discriminates against gays, violating university nondiscrimination policies.

The government won the argument in March 2005, when the Supreme Court upheld the so-called Solomon Amendment, a 1996 measure that allowed the government to tie federal funding to military and ROTC recruiting. It is unclear if that law would be applicable in the case of the Ahmadinejad speech, which has nothing to do with military recruiting.

Hunter says the speech and the recent "General Betrayus" Moveon.org ad are emblematic of the emergence of the "extreme left wing."

"Columbia University's hosting of Ahmadinejad is a slap in the face of every one of the 165,000 U.S. troops serving in Iraq. As he speaks, his agents will be moving roadside bombs onto the battlefield to be used against America's military men and women," Hunter wrote

Actually, Rep. Duncan Hunter is definitely for turning Federal controls for public education back to the local level, even encouraging home schooling.

I believe that Rep. Hunter, had he been president, would not have allowed this evil little poor excuse for a man into the country in the first place.

Yeah, I thought so to:

I'd rather he sounded more like Paul.(There are a number of DEPARTMENTS that should be axed.Easier to count. After that, the programs should take care of themselves..)[emphasis in original]

You take a seven word sentence out of the post and insinuate that I changed the topic from Hunter to Paul. You saw your chance to evade the topic of the thread, which is Hunter's unforgivable sin of threatening to withhold taxpayer money from taxpayers because of a political difference. This is exactly the tyranny that the federal government wields. To see a so-called republican do this is sickening.

In the particular post you cite,we were discussing cutting the federal government, with Hunter promising to cut "programs".No doubt,he'll go through them thouroughly to make sure none of "his" pet programs get cut.I was pointing out a different kind of man who wants to cut them all, which is in agreement with my understanding of the role of the federal government..

So he did vote for Trade with Vietnam? Thanks for the confirmation.

I assume "he" refers Ron Paul.On the Duncan Hunter thread.I'll also assume he did.

In the meantime, just look at what a search of Thomas for bills sponsored by Paul and by Hunter turn up.

HUNTER

Private Bill; For the relief of Fouad Yousef Hakim Mansour and Saheir Gamil Shaker Mansour.

To vacate further proceedings in the prosecution of certain named persons.

To implement equal protection under the 14th article of amendment to the Constitution for the right to life of each born and preborn human person.

To prohibit Mexico-domiciled motor carriers from operating beyond United States municipalities and commercial zones on the United States-Mexico border until certain conditions are met to ensure the safety of such operations.

To direct the Secretary of the Interior to conduct a feasibility study to design and construct a four reservoir intertie system for the purposes of improving the water storage opportunities, water supply reliability, and water yield of San Vicente, El Capitan, Murray, and Loveland Reservoirs in San Diego County, California in consultation and cooperation with the City of San Diego and the Sweetwater Authority, and for other purposes.

To prohibit a State from charging an individual more than $200 for a permit or license to hunt big game on Federal public lands within that State.

Amendment prohibiting the use of funds to participate in a working group pursuant to the Security and Prosperity Partnership.

PAUL

Expressing the sense of Congress that the President should implement Recommendation 9 of the Iraq Study Group Report.

Amending the Rules of the House of Representatives to ensure that Members have a reasonable amount of time to read legislation that will be voted upon.(What a novel concept!)

Proposing an amendment the Constitution of the United States relative to abolishing personal income, estate, and gift taxes and prohibiting the United States Government from engaging in business in competition with its citizens.

Proposing an amendment to the Constitution of the United States to deny United States citizenship to individuals born in the United States to parents who are neither United States citizens nor persons who owe permanent allegiance to the United States.

To provide greater health care freedom for seniors.

To limit the jurisdiction of the Federal courts, and for other purposes.

To restore to taxpayers awareness of the true cost of government by eliminating the withholding of income taxes by employers and requiring individuals to pay income taxes in monthly installments, and for other purposes. Sponsor: Rep Paul, Ron [TX-14] (introduced 9/19/2007) Cosponsors (None)

You'll never get people to back your candidate by pointing out to others how bad the rest are.I'm sure Duncan Hunter stands for good things, but he blew this one.And it's no small matter,as far as I'm concerned. The notion that we have to pay taxes, the benefits for which will be doled out according to some poitical ideology,is something the democrats do.

The republicans learned this lesson from Newt Gingrich and his cohorts, and now we have a republican congress and administration that knows the joy of spending taxpayer money to win elections.

You might note that aside from the mention of the 14th amendment in one of Hunter's bills, the subject matter is temporal. Many of Paul's bills directly address the serious systemic problems with our government.

All the bill titles I got from Thomas, but the links were identical.Best to go to the homepage, browse bills by sponsor,etc.-http://thomas.loc.gov/There were only seven bills from Hunter and over 50 for Paul.

I mentioned his name.I was not at all surprised that you took any excuse to not discuss the blunder that "conservative" Duncan Hunter made.I did not express surprise.Of course I now wonder how you would have answered if I had left the reference to Paul out.If I had said,"I would rather he talk about restoring constitutional government instead of using public money as his own personal whip.like the democrats do so well".I know you don't have an answer to that because you've been reading the thread for over an hour and you just want to discuss Ron Paul. You're like Sean Hannity and his obsession with Hillary Clinton. This man is a warmed over RINO.

Tyranny? What planet are you living on. Is it Tyranny for Hunter to also stop all payments for the SPP? I’m sure there are many hard working taxpayers that are doing their best to see the SPP come to fruition. How about cutting off funds for abortion providers. Those folks are also taxpayers. The only difference is, the SPP and abortion folks are not feting a foreign enemy (self declared).

No,tyranny is saying “Ive got your money, and unless you act in a way acceptable to me,there will be none for you. We’re talking about Duncan Hunter threatening to withhold taxpayer money from taxpayers because he disagrees with something they’ve done,or want to do.My argument is that the very thought of giving taxpayer money for anything other than constitutionally allowed purposes is abhorrent to any real conservative.Period.

This guy is just another establishment politician, you know,tweedle-dum.

Did Paul write legislation to block money from the SPP? How about to stop funding the DOT from introducing mexican trucks on america’s roads? How about to defund the incarceration of Ramos and Compean? Paul might think a school that bans the ROTC and military recruiters from campus then turns around and invites a man who just recently led the “death to America” chant in Tehran has some free speech rights in the US, but Hunter does not. It is aiding and abetting the enemy. Tyranny me rear end.

If your idea of a conservative is Ron Paul, you better think again. Anyone who writes for Lewrockwell.com and AntiWar.com is no conservative.

I met Hunter and spent some time with him. I have to tell you all, he is a tough guy. I am not kidding. He commands respect.

There is no doubt that he is not one of the "yogurt men" in Washington, he is very respected man. America needs him as President now more than ever.
