The latest issue of Texas Monthly magazine examines the case of former Border Patrol agents Jose Alonso Compean and Ignacio Ramos and questions why conservatives are celebrating them as heroes.
Compean and Ramos are serving 12 and 11 years in prison respectively for shooting and wounding a Mexican drug dealer and trying to cover it up.
The case has become a cause celebre among conservatives and groups that advocate tougher border controls. Supporters say that the agents were wrongly convicted for protecting the United States against criminal intruders. Many are angry that the drug dealer who entered the United States illegally was offered immunity to testify against the officers.
Members of Congress have asked President Bush to pardon the agents and the prosecutor in the case, U.S. Attorney Johnny Sutton of the Western District of Texas, staunchly defended his office at a Senate hearing earlier this year.
The Texas Monthly article says that in an effort to push a tough line against illegal immigration talk radio shows, CNNs Lou Dobbs Tonight, and conservative blogs glossed over nearly all of the damning facts at trial including that Ramos and Compean ommitted the shooting from the official report of the incident and did not offer a self-defense explanation until a month after it happened.
Set against the backdrop of the national debate over immigration, a new narrative emerged, one in which Ramos and Compean were recast as American heroes, unjustly persecuted by a government that cared more about amnesty for illegal immigrants than about border security, the article says.
The story, titled Badges of Dishonor also says that Dobbs opined about the case on more than one hundred broadcasts.
Uh huh.
Compean and Ramos got twice the time this illegal alien terrorist got.

Man (illegal alien) sentenced for raping girl By BRIAN SCHEID
A 30-year-old illegal immigrant was sentenced to at least five years in state prison in Bucks County court Friday, five months after he admitted to repeatedly raping an adolescent girl.
Carlos Salustio, a Mexican immigrant who was living illegally in Warminster, pleaded guilty in April to rape of a child and related charges for as many as 25 sexual incidents with the girl over a two-year period, starting when the girl was 10.
I have nothing against the ads, but the magazine often takes hits at “the evil capitalist pigs” and “greedy Republicans”. All the pinko twaddle interspersed with ads for stuff that only “capitalist pigs” can buy and enjoy. It is like having Pravda mixed with the Robb Report.
“Man sentenced for raping girl”
Don’t change the subject. We were talking about about a couple of ICE agents who shot a non paying smuggler
drug dealers should thank us for keeping them alive
No, were talking about two Americans border agents who shot a repeat offender drug smuggler, who they then used as a witness against the border agents. And then the local DA down in Texas was caught making fabricated statements.
Just this week, an illegal alien Carlos Salustio, who was living illegally in Warminster, pleaded guilty in April to rape of a child and related charges for as many as 25 sexual incidents with the girl over a two-year period, starting when the girl was 10.
This illegal alien, who repeatedly raped a 10 year old girl, received half the sentence Compean and Ramos received.
Your ridiculous assertion is a “Figment” of your imagination.
Too late. Mexico already owns it -- along with Rick Perry, Calderon's shoe shine boy.
The reason Salustio got little more than a slap on the wrist for repeated rape of a 10-year-old kid is that he was convicted in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, not in Texas. There’s still some semblance of justice in Texas.
I think you're being a little charitable there...
It is 2007 and we have the internet.
We don't have to put up with mis-info, we can read the trial transcripts.
And we are talking about a Prosecutor who gave said "non-paying smuggler" immunity to re-enter the country and become involved in further crimes under government protection, in exchange for his testimony.
Said "non-paying smuggler," is a personal friend of another BP Agent. The Texas Two are certainly not heroes, but their trial was a miscarriage of justice.
Figgie, you have a point. But you may lack common sense. The Border Patrol is a dirty outfit, more like a Mexican law enforcement operation than an American one. From top to bottom, it is involved with shady activities on the wrong side of the border. But you don't clean up a mess like this from the bottom. Heroes, or bums, or somwhere in between, these two guys got screwed; the Mexican government demanded it. It's possible they messed with someone else's paydays.
By the way, that Sutton character...What a piece of work he is.
Never heard that side of the issue. Sources please?
“Texas Monthly has for several years been a water bearer for lefties.”
...but it’s always been a boring, crappy magazine.
Good one!
