Rep. Ron Paul of Texas, an old-fashioned conservative with a strong libertarian streak, inspires a small but growing base of fervent admirers with his strict interpretation of Congress' powers
No matter who shows up at this week's Republican presidential debate in Baltimore, it's a good bet the biggest applause will go to the most conservative man onstage.
He's Rep. Ron Paul, a perfect protest candidate for 2008. Trained as a physician, he's "Dr. Paul" to a small but growing base of fervent admirers - more than a few of whom could fairly be called zealots.
Around the Capitol, the Texas congressman is "Dr. No," for his frequent, and often lonely, insistence on opposing any legislation that, in his view, exceeds the authority explicitly given to Congress by the framers of the Constitution.
Now, at 72, this enemy of central government is finding overnight success in some unusual places, such as college campuses.

It seems silly that Paul is called a ‘protectonist’.
How do you call someone who voted for and supported MFN for China, protectionist? He was even against trade sactions for Iran and Iraq.
“Texas Republican Rep. Ron Paul, who says he voted for MFN because of his libertarian belief in free trade” http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m1571/is_n26_v13/ai_19601315 -———————————
On July 27, by a vote of 170 to 260, the House failed to pass a joint resolution rejecting President Clinton’s decision to continue Normal Trade Relations (NTR)-formerly called Most Favored Nation trade relations-with Communist China for another year.
Rep. Ron Paul (R.-Tex.) opposed the bill, saying, “Trade policy should never be mixed with the issue of domestic political problems.” Paul, who strongly opposes U.S. military intervention, also said that “it is true that nations that trade are less likely to go to war with one another.”

-—————— “China’s record on human rights has been far from perfect, but there aren’t many perfect nations in the world. Even the United States government has been known to abuse the liberties of her own citizens. The important point is that removing MFN status from China will do nothing to improve the lives of the citizens of China, and many believe it could make conditions worse.
It is also inconsistent to deny MFN status to countries like Iran, Iraq, and Libya because of their civil rights positions. For instance, because Iraq grants greater personal freedom, it actually treats its citizens and Christians in a more favorable way than do Saudi Arabia and Kuwait. U.S. sanctions against Iraq have been outrageously immoral by starving children and denying medical care that could be obtained if they were allowed more free trade.
Some complain about the trade imbalance and Red China’s accumulation of American dollars, but this is no threat. If the Red Chinese didn’t buy our debt, the Federal Reserve would have to.”

Also:
By a margin of 150 to 71 (Roll Call no. 338, 260-170, 7/27/99) House Republicans voted to support Bill Clinton’s extension of Most-Favored-Nation (MFN) status for Red China, which status results in a transfer of wealth from the American economy to the Chinese economy amounting to more than $60 billion per year. The 150 Republicans who voted with Clinton and against America’s best interests were: , Paul (Tex.), etc.

I know perfectly well that it wouldn’t work.
That’s why the Libertarian candidate gets less than 1% of the vote. Their theory sounds great, but it wouldn’t suit most people.
Then how come theres $60 billion of goods over here, and $60 billion of electronic dollars over there?
That's when the words turned into steaming excriment.
Ron Paul blames America for Islamic hate. That is total lunacy, and is a fatal qualifier for being a "Conservative"
Take this crap over to DUmmie-land or Moveon.org.
It still hasn't dawned on you yet?
Remember the leftist who hijacked McCain's campiagn in 04'?
I doubt you even remember that.
Libertarian and Conservative are two separate things. I used to belong to a Libertarian blog group but had to leave it because when push came to shove, they sided most often against America, against the military and they have very different views about abortion and other family issues. I finally, in spite of some very good writers among the group, decided that enough was enough. I don’t trust Ron Paul to be conservative enough. He agrees with Hillary far too much to be comfortable.
GTFO of here with our "police action" leftist spew.
Dubyas is saving your ass whether you like it or not. In your case, you don't like it, and I take exception to Dubya saving your ass.
I need some socks. Can you tell me the best place to buy socks?
The other 90% are wack job Anti American Leftists who only are supporting Paul because they think he will be their Trojan Horse to splint the conservative movement and elect Hillary.
That 90% is NEVER going to vote for any Republican on A General Election ticket. The Paul-bots are simply kidding themselves if they think their boy can win anything. Heck, he cannot even win the Freeper Members poll. And if you cannot win the Freeper members poll as a “Conservative” you are going NO where in the primaries.
So all the Paul support is just a diabolical Kucinich conspiracy......riiight. Your tin foil hat ia a little crooked today
Because Kuncinich has NO chance to win where supporting Paul they hope to fractionalize the Conservative base
How it defending Congressional Earmarks, as Paul does, for Limited Govt?
How is pigging out on over $400 million in earmarks to fat cat special interest groups showing his fidelity to “limited Govt” principals.
Paul is a fraud who says all these nice sounding things to keep all the fringe Know Nothing Buchannaites types all excited while being just another good old boy politician in reality.
Yes, the Run Paul crowd is in bed with the Left on the war and the Neo-Nazis and al Qaeda on Israel.
The troll-support is a simple political trick where partisans use any legal method they can to skew the results of a poll among candidates to highlight the issue, not the candidate.
In this case, anti-war derangement has reached a fever pitch, and the anti-war left is hijacking TehRon Paul's campaign for one issue alone, guess which one it is?
How does it feel to side with Moveon, DUmmies, George Soros, Cindy Sheehan, Harry Ried, Nancy Peloci and other filth on this issue, the most critical one above all others?
Anti-Iraq War kooks need to GTFO of FreeRepublic
I disagree with Paul on the war but I have more confidence in his integrity than anyone else running in either party and unless something changes he will get my vote.
John McCain should have been kicked out of the GOP(and the Senate) for his sponsorship of the Campaign Finance "Reform" bill which bears his name.Thompson should seek a new season of whatever the hell it is he appears in on TV.Romney should pack his dog on top of his car again and see the country, and leave governing it to someone else.Giuliani.Rudi Julie-Annie.Rudolf "Rico" Giuliani.
Rep. For all the complaining on this board about politicians who don't follow the constitution, you'd think Paul would attract more support here.Equating Paul with Kucinich is about the most naive thing I've seen posted here."hey Hitler had an army,we have an army too,.We're just like Hitler."
Love that Baltimore Sun,too. An object lesson in biased writing.I've excerpted a few choice words,no doubt offered up to the writer by his word processor when dealing with a conservative...fervent...zealots...fringes...ideology...isolationist...viral...white supremacist...hard-line...
I know!! Before he came into office 'they' were going to build a mosque right next door!! Oh that's right 'they' weren't. Go get back in your safe zone under the bed junior. The scare rhetoric is no longer working, as evidenced by the poll numbers, signifying a growing discontent in the general electorate.
Ah yes leave it to you to bring up a dead horse that’s already been beaten soundly and whose message has been discredited as false. But you really don’t have anything else do you? Do me a favor, go find the biggest government ‘conservative’ you can and vote for him eh?
