The standoff between San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom and embattled Supervisor Ed Jew shot up another notch this weekend with the mayor asking the city attorney to draw up charges that could lead to Jew's forced removal if he does not resign.
According to sources close to the case, the paperwork is being drawn up today and will likely be ready sometime this week.
"It's not a position I want to be in," Newsom said late Saturday after Jew didn't return repeated phone calls. "But I'm compelled to move because this is just the type of situation that the City Charter was written for." According to the mayor, the charter provision regarding removal of a supervisor for official misconduct was intended for such a case.
The mayor and Jew met briefly Friday and were supposed to talk again Saturday - but Jew, on advice of his lawyers, did not pick up the mayor's phone call.
"Enough is enough," Newsom said.
What Newsom had wanted - and failed to get - was some sort of signal from Jew that he would resign within a week or two.
The idea, according to those close to the mayor, was to give Jew time to work out plea agreements on the perjury and federal mail-fraud charges facing the supervisor.
The perjury charges allege that Jew didn't live in his Sunset District house when he ran for office.
The more serious federal mail-fraud complaint - which came down Thursday - painted Jew as the mastermind of an alleged "permit for pay" shakedown that netted him $40,000 in marked bills from a local Chinese tapioca drink franchise.
Within hours of the federal complaint, Mayor Newsom - who had been holding back his fire - called on Jew to resign.

Exactly right. Newsome wasn’t holding back his fire, he was working through his henchmen for the last several months. The federal charges are troublesome here, but all the bs about his residency is highly doubtable because SF doesn’t require permanent residency.
Watch closely to see what happens to a person that is outside of the homo-driven agenda and will stick to principles.
I can’t wait to tune in to Savage tomorrow and get his reaction on this.
Ed Jew was the only SF Supervisor to defend Savage in the recent incident where they are attempting to shut his radio show down in SFO.
I thought firing people was illegal in SF...
