Now that is interesting. They can determine where it came from.

From what I understand, all nuclear material has things called “tags” which allow it to be traced back to its origin.

Yes. We can tell quite accurately where fissile materials come from, by minor differences in isotopic distributions and contaminants. Those nations with nuclear capabilities know this well, and moreover they know that we will treat nuclear attacks by "rogue" elements as if they came from the nation in whose territory the material originated.

Yep they can, by the isotopic mixture. Each reactor has its own signature.

Nuclear material from different reactors can be matched. I read once that it was like DNA and the site of it’s production can be accurately determined.

I've read before that individual reactors have a fingerprint of sorts, trace elements that can uniquely identify the reactor that produced it. It has something to do with the variety of batches of stuff they run through a reactor which makes a unique trace elements signature.

I've tried to find out more about this but can't make a google search to find further info.

A good nukie can, by an analysis of the impurities, tell which reactor it came from and sometimes, even when and/or where in the reactor it was positioned.

Oh, yes. If the material in question was Amerian, they could tell what reactor it came from..

Yep. Each batch is recorded for it’s particular signature makeup. There all just a lil bit different.

This is an alarming development coming outta of the Mideast.

It’s time. We should attack while Immanutjob is in NY.

We should then arrest him and put him on trial for crimes committed against our embassy.

Yes - based on trace impurities etc they can fingerprint the source of the fissionable material.

I believe the enrichment process leaves a tell tale signature. Terrible source, but I remember a Tom Clancy book that talked about the same subject.

when it comes to nuclear material identification, each reactor produces an “isotopic mix” that is as unique as a person’s finger prints.

We can tell (down to which reactor) where a sample was manufactured.
