LONDON (MarketWatch) -- In yet another sign of the American auto industry's decline, British Airways on Wednesday said it would halt flights from Detroit to London, saying it doesn't see any "possible upswing" on the route.

"Detroit was a route very dependent on the auto industry, and the changing nature of this sector made it a very challenging market to be in," British Airways said in a statement.

Given the choice, I would always pick Gatwick over Heathrow. Less congested and more convenient.

I would almost agree except Heathrow has an Underground subway station, while you have to ride the Gatwick Express train to get back to London then transfer to the Underground. Also, with Terminal 5 opening next year, it'll be a lot more pleasant experience for British Airways travellers.

Their PHX-LHR nonstop is always full and quite costly. I don't think they'll be dropping that one anytime soon.

Are we to assume that Detroit’s having one of the highest concentrations of muslims outside the M.E has nothing to do with this? OK, sure, what ever

Possible but I would take them at face value on this one. There just isn't much reason for anyone to go from UK/EU to Detroit anymore.

Aren’t there other Deeeetroit racial problems more important and damaging than with Muslims?

How is LHR going to support all of those additional flights switching from LGW?

Fewer domestic connections for BA and getting slots from other Skyteam partners like Air France. BA is putting pressure on the British government to build a third runway long enough for narrow bodied planes for connecting flights to Britain and Europe. This would free up the existing runways for wide body and long haul traffic. Many cities in Britain have better service to Amsterdam (AMS) than to LHR. If LHR doesn't expand, it will lose business to better designed European hubs that have more runways and room to expand.

The democrat party has utterly destroyed Detroit.

The only way to revive Detroit into an inhabitable region, would be to remove 100% of democrat party scum from office.

Detroit is New Orleans without the benefit of having a Hurricane as their excuse...

...with a city government every bit as corrupt.

Okay, so let’s hear your opinion about the state.
Honestly, we’ve become one of the country’s worst stories. “Say it ain’t so, Joe”.

Thank God I’m independent and not beholden to no one at this point in my life.

I’m one of the idiots who believes in this town. I keep saying it’s so close to the bottom there’s nowhere to go but up from here.

You tell him! The nerve of some people!

By the way, want to buy a few houses in Detroit? They’re going for less than $10,000! At that price why not buy a dozen!

How about it? You TALK a good game! Got a little something in savings? Put up or shut up.

With an influx of Muslims, that will actually make Detroit improve. I think it depends on the kind of the Muslims we're talking about. If the Turks, Kurds, or secular Iraqis are moving in Detroit in droves, they just might save the city.

Not all Muslims are bad. And the good news is that the American born Muslims are not radicalized as the ones in London.
