Rudy Giuliani told the National Rifle Association Friday that his own views on gun control have evolved in part due to the Sept. 11 attacks, which he said highlighted the importance of the Second Amendment right of allowing law-abiding citizens to carry guns.
Facing a group that he once likened to "extremists," Giuliani sought to temper his past strong support for national gun control laws by saying he could no longer support a lawsuit he filed as New York mayor in 2000, which was designed to hold gun-makers liable for gun violence.
Giuliani said "there have been subsequent intervening events -- Sept. 11 -- which casts somewhat of a different light on the Second Amendment and Second Amendment rights. It doesn't change the fundamental rights, but maybe it highlights the necessity for them more."
Giuliani has built his presidential campaign on convincing Republicans that his performance after the Sept. 11 attacks shows he is the strong leader America needs -- but it was the first time he had linked his personal views on gun control to the terror attacks.
The lawsuit -- which ironically was being debated in a New York appeals court Friday as well -- was one of the sharpest points of disagreement between Giuliani and the gunrights lobby, which he criticized as President Bill Clinton's leading Republican ally in pushing for a national assault weapons ban.
Giuliani rival John McCain also criticized the former mayor's tactics Friday, calling it a "particularly devious effort to use lawsuits to bankrupt our great manufacturers. A number of big-city mayors decided it was more important to blame the manufacturers of a legal product than it was to control crime in their own cities."
Former Tennessee Sen. Fred Thompson also addressed the meeting of about 400 NRA members, winning by far the...

I don’t trust him. He is a liberal.
“Rudy Giuliani told the National Rifle Association Friday that his own views on gun control have evolved in part due to the Sept. 11 attacks, which he said highlighted the importance of the Second Amendment right of allowing law-abiding citizens to carry guns.”
Actually, he’s got a little bit of ‘politician speak’ in there....you take out the ‘in part’, and you have an assessment any American should be able to support! ie, the Rudy after 9/11 is a different animal than the Rudy before 9/11, just as is EVERY American a different animal ‘after 9/11’. Americans with brains will only vote for a Credibly Strong Second Amendment president in ‘08! Nothing less will do!
I couldn’t help noticing your tagline which added to your comment requires a response:
You’ve bought into the ‘success story’ of the islamowackos that crashed their planes on 9/11. binLaden’s ‘heroes’ were probably failures, not successes when more closely examined! I mean why would a practicing muslim even wish to fly in the USA? Why, we take our rolled pork sandwiches to lunch every day of the week! There was probably as many rolled pork sandwiches on those planes as there were box cutters. There were probably a couple passengers partaking in our favorite lunch right in front of the ‘faithful’!!! I mean every time you turn around you’re driving by a Sonny’s Barbeque, smoking away! I know it’s farfetched, but imagine if one of the planes had crashed into a Sonny’s Barbeque on final approach....wait, that just happened this week in North Carolina! binLaden’s ‘superstar’ 19 ‘faithful’ were probably incinerated with so much rolled pork sandwiches they’re burning in hell with the rest of the ‘infidels’ on those planes! So I don’t buy into your inflated view of the success of the 19 ‘faithful heroes’ at all!
If it “changed” him, then how many handguns has he purchased since 9/11? how many firing ranges has he frequented? how many, if any, weapons does he own?
Rudy is a liar of the lowest caliber - maybe that’s the association to weapons he has...
I like Rudy but I feel he's being disingenuous. My two major problems with him are the abortion and gun control issues. He's stated he'll appoint conservative justices, and it's obvious he's trying to reach out to the pro-gun crowd... but is he trustworthy? What could we do if he gains the office and flips on us? Nothing.
Hunter is my man but I'll vote for whoever the GOP nominates(sans Ron Paul). I learned my lesson after the Perot debacle.
“Correct me if I’m wrong, but wasn’t “Flipper” Giuliani still trying to sue gun makers out of business after 9/11?”
That ‘should be’ easy to vet in the records of the trial currently in progress in NYC!
If Julie-Annie really supported the 2nd amendment, he would say, “Everybody who is eligible should buy a gun and learn how to use it”.
If people did this, the gun sales data would send a clear signal to RINO’s, Democrats, other socialists, criminals, tyrants, and even the terrorists.
Rudy: “I was for the assault weapons ban before I was against it!”.
It didn’t take much double talk and double standards to confuse the NRA meeting into a standing ovation. I will not be fooled by this slick NY mayor.
Anyone wanting to serve the people should have to pass a written exam that shows that they know, understand and respect the U.S. Constitution, that theyre intelligent enough and responsible enough to honor their oath to uphold and defend the same.
Genius, pure genius....I’d only make one slight change:
Anyone wanting to serve the people should have to pass a written exam that shows that they know, understand and respect the U.S. Constitution, that theyre ‘credibly’ intelligent enough and responsible enough to honor their oath to uphold and defend the same.
Yep, Romney blew his big chance! It was his groups ancestors who recruited Jonathan Browning as the armorer in their move from Council Bluffs, Iowa to Ogden, Utah. Jonathan Browning was the sire of John Moses Browning, the ‘spirit of genius’, reknowned guru, most prolific gundesigner/gunmaker, saved America’s bacon in 2 world wars, larger than life, Winchester backbone, Worlds Most Famous Mormon. If the 2nd Amendment is what makes all the other Amendments, then John Moses Browning is what makes the 2nd Amendment!
We can’t offer the red states a choice between a lying flip flopping liberal NY mayor and a liberal lying NY Senator. Its way past time for Rudy to go home.
You’re right on both counts. My take is that he should have “seen the light” when (or if) he read the Constitution. Then his conversion would have been rooted in principle, rather than a changeable reaction to circumstances. 9/11 changed him (supposedly). What about 3 more Virginia Tech calamities? Would that change him back, since his views aren’t grounded in principle?
We need a president with vision rather than hindsight.
Whatever is expedient for the day and the group.
He has the fortitude and honestly of a ... hmm, Im stuck for a comparison. I dont want to insult anything, be it animal or inanimate
He has the fortitude and honestly of a politician..............
There ya go! Of course - and that's the main = and wide - difference between him and Fred - and all the others and Fred.
The whole pack on both sides, except Fred, have lived and dreamed of power politics = Fred never aspired to politics, He was drafted for the senate, and left when he could easily have won again, having won both times with a record 20% - and he prodded into this. He's in it for the RIGHT reasons...like the forefathers.
**************
Notice the language he uses. He can't bring himself to really commit to the Second Amendment, which tells me that he's attempting to hide his continuing distaste for it. He's still a gun-grabber, imho.
Who says they were fooled? You?
The reason the candidates are meeting with the NRA is because they are most effective gun rights group we have.
