The somewhat sad thing is that folks like Al Gore, OJ, and Dan Rather have actually convinced themselves they are right.

A fraudulent leftist named Bill Burkett is supposed to be the link between CBS and the fake documents. Whether he typed them up himself on his own PC or someone else did it, he was supposedly the point of transmission to CBS. He claimed to receive them from some fictional "Lucy Ramirez" under mysterious circumstances -- naturally she has never been identified as any real person. Here is the Wikipedia summary:

"Bill Burkett was the CBS source in the Killian documents affair of 2004. He claimed that in 1997, while outside the governor's office in Austin, he overheard a conversation about "wanting to bury George W. Bush's Vietnam service record." These charges have since been dismissed as fabrications. Burkett claimed that he received the Killian documents, purported to have been typed in the early seventies, from a woman calling herself "Lucy Ramirez." To date, she has not been identified. Burkett claimed that he faxed the documents to CBS and then burned the originals. The documents were subsequently widely reported to have almost certainly been produced from a computer using Microsoft Word on the default settings.

Regardless of if the story had some elements of truth, the reporting was totally fabricated. For that you were fired Dan, not for taking a shot at the White House.

I see this as a legalized form of blackmail.
Dano is not suing because he’s been mistreated.

Dano knows that CBS does not want to release the
results of their internal investigation (if any)
of the TANG hoax docs. In particular they don’t
want to let the chain of custody be known (as it
probably includes the DNC).

This is legal Discovery used as a negotiating tool.

CBS will settle.
They will also spin (”we were hasty in taking
action over the fake but true docs”).
