Guiliani Claims An Evolution on Guns Rights

Glossing over the less appealing line items on his gun control resume, ex-NYC mayor Rudy Giuliani presented himself as sympathetic to the aims of the National Rifle Association and pledged, as president, to protect gun rights.

"Your right to bear arms is based on a reasonable degree of safety," he said. He indicated that he would oppose new efforts to tighten national gun laws. "I believe that law endforcement should focus on enforcing the laws that exist on the books as opposed to passing new extensions of laws," he said.

"A person's home is their castle. They have the right to protect themselves in their own home." Giulaini explained the lawsuit he initiated in 2000 against gun manufacturers by saying that he was "excessive in everyway that I could think of in order to reduce crime" but said that "intervening events" like September 11th had caused his views to evolve. "I think that lawsuit has gone in the direction that I don't agree it."

He cited a DC court ruling overturning the city's gun ban as instrumental to changing and "strengthening" his views on gun control. That ruling, Parker vs. the Distict of Columbia, was handed down just as Giuliani was beginning his presidential bid. Giuliani said that MoveOn.org's ad criticizing Gen. Petreaus was out of bounds and hinted that the group should face some sort of sanction.

"They passed a line that we should not allow an American political organizations to pass," he said. "We are at war right now, whether some people want to recognize it or not."

I don’t suppose being left handed would matter when getting a shotgun?

Depends on the shotgun. Ones that eject downward are good for left or right handed folks. Even the other sort that eject out the right side, can be used left handed, my brother does it all the time. Most don't even bother with a left handed safety, which is really cheap to add. The Mossberg and Browning have ambidextrous thumb safeties, and the Browning is one of those that ejects downward, it's completely ambidextrous right out of the box. The Maverick is not, but as I said, add a left handed safety, and it's quite usable by left handed folks.

Do you have a left master eye as well? My brother does, and in fact that is the reason he shoots a shotgun left handed. If you don't know what that means, just google it. Or go here, which gives a way to test yourself for left/right eye dominance.

I think “positive reinforcement” should be shot through with healthy amounts of vitriolic skepticism, to remind him that he doesn’t get a pass so easily.

True, but I was speaking of the 2nd Amendment per se. not it’s origin. You are right though.

Wouldn't you agree that this is at least a step in the right direction on Rudy's part? Isn't this a good thing, that he sees the worth of the arguments of those who want to protect our right to own firearms?

I’m a lefty and shoot left, and I’ve owned the same RH Sears 20g shotgun for like 15 years, and it still shoots the same every time. Ejection never bothered me because I learned to shoot young, and prop up the gun by holding the pump from underneath so it never gets in the way of shell ejection.

I’d absolutely agree that it’s a step in the right direction. But a broken watch is still right twice a day...

The only law on firearms in the US that matters reads "shall not be infringed". The weasel words he uses above have been the rally cry for every POS chunk of unConstitutional legislation to come out of Congress' collectivist arse.

Rudy, if you were on fire I wouldn't cross the street to spit on you to save your life.

Evolution? Nope.

His position is (un)intelligently designed to obfuscate.

IS it a step in the right direction?
Or is it just saying whatever garners enough votes?

A politician asking “what can I do to win your vote” isn’t interested in what he can do, he just wants your vote. Once he has your vote, he has no reason to continue doing whatever he had to do to get it.

Wow. That's scary.

I presume the "sanction" he's talking about is not mere public derision, to which they have been subject ever since they stuck their collective foot in their mouths.

But if not, is he seriously suggesting that calling a general some peurile name ought be punished by the government?

I've said it before, and I'll say it again: Rudy does not love freedom, only power.

So he doesn't like the 1st Amendment either. Wonderful.

The flaw in that logic is that you assume he is sincere rather than the liar that he obvious is.

The guy is as credible as Bill Clinton.

That one snuck by me when I skim-read the last bit of it. Good catch, and... wow. Shows very little understanding of the BoR as a whole, doesn’t he?

He's seeing the light

don't you mean he's seeing the political expediency of changing his position? you can't possibly believe he's sincere????

I'll give him this: he's consistent. He admits he thinks the Second Amendment can and should be limited by the states, and he's willing to apply the same fluid standards to the First.

This man is a Fascist, in the original meaning of the term.

I think he should change his name to Benito Andrea Amilcare Giuliani.

There isn't any substantial difference between the to of them

Sometimes one has to conclude that a poster either isn't paying attention or is attempting to mislead.

BTW, how is Georgia "occupied?"

“Jimenez is a decent modestly priced gun too, I’ve heard a lot of positives from owners.”

I’m a gunsmith. I love them and all other cheap guns that break frequently.
