Zara withdraws swastika handbags

The fashion chain Zara has withdrawn a handbag from its stores after a customer pointed out that the design featured swastikas.

Zara said the bag came from an external supplier and the symbol had not been visible when it was selected.

A customer who returned the bag to the shop when she noticed the symbol said staff had been "shocked" to see it.

As well as being the Nazi symbol, the swastika is also a religious symbol for Hindus and Buddhists.

The customer, Rachel Hatton, said, "I was quite shocked - I took it back to the shop."

"Then obviously the shop assistants were quite shocked as well to find out this symbol was on there - it was not something that they'd noticed either straight away," she told BBC Radio 4's Today programme.

"Had the symbol been seen we would not have sourced that particular handbag," said Zara spokesperson Susan Suett.

"As a precaution we've obviously taken the decision to immediately withdraw the item from sale on being informed of this particular bit of information," she added.

Zara is owned by the Spanish company Inditex.

PING

I was going to post this the other day, at the time they hadn’t taken them off sale - thankfully they have seen sense.

How on EARTH could this possibly happen?

The swastika is one the most recognised symbols, so surely this was intentional. I think they owe further explanation.

True, but they swirl in opposite directions. The one in the photo is a NAZI oriented swastika.

Kipling was fond of the swastika and you find it in all of his books from the 1890's-1920's. It is not the same as the NAZI swastika though.

“swastika is one the most recognised symbol”

It origins pre-date Egypt but think about it, people working in purse stores or retail have no history regarding it so they actually have no idea.

The “swastika” was an old American Indian design they used in their basket and blanket designs for maybe centuries. Too bad the Nazis had to ruin it. They called it the “Hakenkreuz”, Hooked Cross.............

Indian Swastika with Mount of Holy Cross shown in postcard published in 1908 by Henrietta Ambruster of Denver. The card features a bit of doggerel referring to Colorado features and reads as follows (with referents in parenthesis).

'Tis only a bit of mountains grand (in reference to the Mount of the Holy Cross)

'Tis only a Columbine blue (in reference to the Columbine flower),

'Tis only a sign from good luck land (in reference to the Indian Swastika)

With best wishes from me to you.

A surprising symbol in John Deere's past

Swastika meant good before evil

What symbols first come to mind when you think of John Deere? Probably the leaping deer and the plow, right? Would you be surprised to know that a swastika also pops up in Deere history? In fact, you’ll find one on a Waterloo Boy "Good Luck" token.

Slightly larger than a penny, the Waterloo Boy "Good Luck" token is a special piece of John Deere memorabilia.

This coin-like collectible says "GOOD LUCK Membership emblem of the Don’t Worry Club" around the outer edge on the front. Inside is a swastika symbol with four good luck icons in each quadrant; a 4-leaf clover, a horseshoe, a wishbone, and an unidentified set of three Plains Indian hieroglyphic-like sketches that resemble buildings.

The reverse of the coin reads "Waterloo Boy Gasoline Engines Are Sure To Bring You Good Luck, Waterloo, Iowa."

The Swastika, pictures of Mohammed, and pictures of the teletubbies will always infuriate some.

So what.
