2 students shot at Delaware State University; campus on lockdown as police search for gunman Friday, September 21, 2007

DOVER, Delaware - Two students were shot at Delaware State University early Friday and the campus was locked down as police searched for a gunman, officials said. Classes were canceled for the day.

A male student was hospitalized in stable condition, and a female student was hospitalized with injuries that are considered serious, according to a news release on the university's Web site. "They could be potentially life-threatening," university spokesman Carlos Holmes said. Police hoped to find out more information once the victims were able to talk. "We haven't had a chance to talk to them yet, and that's probably a big reason why the suspect is still at large," Holmes told KYW-TV of Philadelphia. The students were shot around 1 a.m., the news release said. Students were instructed to stay in their residence halls until further notice, and nonessential university employees were told not to report to work. At the university's main entrance, swing-arm gates were down to prevent people from driving onto campus. A historically black college founded in 1890 as the State College for Colored Students, Delaware State had about 3,600 students from 38 states and 31 countries in 2006. The 400-acre (162-hectare) campus was surrounded Friday by groups of recreational vehicles belonging to NASCAR fans in town for this weekend's races at the Dover Downs Speedway.

Thank God the two victims are alive.

I wonder if the University has a policy that prevented them from defending themselves, and I wonder if this was a romantic dispute.

The three college students, shot in Newark, NJ went there. I wonder if there might be a connection.

??Not sure why that was included.

Undoubtedly true, but why after describing the college as Historically Black do they drop in an otherwise unrelated fact like that?

They may be insinuating that there is tension in the air because NASCAR fans are usually white and DSU is an historically black university.

The subtext is "two students at a proud historically black college were shot and nearly killed at exactly the same time that the area was crowded with redneck, good 'ol boy stock car racing fans."

If they find the shooter, will they ask the two most obvious questions:

a-Are you illegal?

b-Are you on anti-depressants?

We all know about the a factor.

It seems b is the most common factor in recent school shootings.

The fact it is race weekend in Dover is actually a related fact..........the population of Dover this week is nearly triple the normal [population because of the race campers, in other words there is much stress on local law enforcement because of so many people.

this is also part of the background subtext-

...while race tensions in America are high due to the protests by the Rev. Jackson and Rev. Sharpton in regards to the ‘Jena 6.’

Good point. Dover has a population of 32,000 and the Speedway has a capacity of 140,000.

The whole population of Kent County could fit in the Speedway.

NASCAR fans = rednecks = gun owners

Therefore, two blacks were shot by a racist, redneck, gun-owning NASCAR fan.

The town is overwhelmed race weeks.....most of the locals I know (I used to be one of them) either hunker down at home or head to southern Kent County to get away from it.

I’m watching for updates at one of the Delaware newspaper sites, and reading the comments on their forum. The racism and racist remarks are truly ugly. It’s not a moderated/monitored forum, but a large number of posts have already been pulled because of the ugliness.

Because NASCAR fans are considered to be Republican voters.

Therefore, the shooting of students can be tied to Republicans.

Also the reporter shows their bias and agenda to the left.

Aren't NASCAR fans "racists" almost by definition? Oh, I suppose there are also "wreckists" among the fans, too.... But they'd be the exceptions that proved the rule.

Was this a White on Black crime?
Or Black on Black crime?

I'm very curious about the relevence of this statement.

There are enough internal racial issues in Delaware, without outsiders stirring up non-existent issues.

About the worst problems that historically have arisen between the campus and the race track are fans trying to park in and around campus seeking to avoid the massive traffic jams after the races.

Historically black college. Boy and girl shot at ~1 am. Almost certainly the shooter will be black as well, and probably not a student.

My first thoughts were of the Newark kids that were shot this summer, who were headed to Delaware State. I didn’t know that Delaware State was a “Black” university. I thought that separate but equal was a thing of the past. Yeah, yeah, I know that whites are not prohibited from attending, but I just think that it was ironic that a bunch of students that prefer self segregation were protesting the Jena Six.

The suspected shooters are both fellow students of the victims.
