WASHINGTON (AP) A homeland security adviser to Rudy Giuliani came under fire Thursday for claiming there were "too many mosques" in the United States and defended himself by saying his point was that not enough Muslim leaders cooperate with law enforcement.
Rep. Peter King, R-N.Y., the former chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee and the top GOP member on the panel, said his comments to the Politico Web site were taken out of context. Democrats said Giuliani should drop him as a campaign adviser.
"I stand by everything I said other than the fact that the Politico totally took it out of context," King said Thursday.
In the Politico interview, King said: "Unfortunately we have too many mosques in this country, there's too many people who are sympathetic to radical Islam. We should be looking at them more carefully, we should be finding out how we can infiltrate, we should be much more aggressive in law enforcement."
As for any political fallout, King told The Associated Press: "Rudy can take care of himself. He's a tough guy, but I would think that campaigns would respect someone like myself who says things that might be politically incorrect but are accurate in that too many Muslim leaders in this country do not denounce extremism."
The congressman was denounced by the DC-based Council on American-Islamic Relations, a group that has long accused King of lobbing unfair attacks against American Muslims.

WTH, being tagged by CAIR is a Badge of Honor at least for all serious Americans!
way to stand up peter king, we support you!
The congressman was denounced by the DC-based Council on American-Islamic Relations, a group that has long supported Hamas and the rest of the Palestinian terrorists.
I fixed it.
Badge of Honor.
Screw CAIR and screw islam!
Peter King bump!
I am not a Giuliani fan, but we ARE at war with radical Islam.
In the old days we did not support growth of the enemy on our soil. We either deported them, or consigned them to camps for the duration of the war, where they were monitored.
Many Germans and Japanese sent money back to their homeland to support the enemy’s war against this country. I have no doubt that our current enemy still does that in addition to planning to do harm to the infidel!
Yet mosques and supermosques are permitted to pop up all over the country. Makes you wonder who the government is for, it’s own people, or everyone but.
King’s right...but he’s still a shamrock-wearing RINO gasbag.
Peter King is absolutely correct
You knew the comments would cause an uproar...but its much smaller so far than I expected when I heard about it.
I would like Peter King to please contact Richard RINO Lugar and talk about the massive Muslim Brotherhood mosque located in Plainfield, Indiana.
Maybe he could point out that they ARE the enemy of the US embedded in our midst.
The same goes for their schools!
If only more politicians had the guts that King has.
95% of Democrats and 50% of Republicans cower in fear of CAIR and their ilk.
As opposed to Bush?
How many other GOP politicians have been as outspoken as King in regards to the Jihadists?
Does King claim Islam is a religion of peace, like the GOP’ers who are in power do?
The congressman was denounced by the DC-based Council on American-Islamic Relations, an unidicted coconspirator that has long supported Hamas and the rest of the Palestinian terrorists.
Improved it more.
“As opposed to Bush?”
I answered about King. You brought up Bush.
King’s a RINO opportunist.
Better a RINO who understand Islam (King) than the RINO who proclams Islam a religion of peace (Bush).
Hey CAIR, the truth hurts! Better put some ice on that.
