Poll: Clinton's lead grows, Thompson tops Giuliani
Other Candidates Still a Long Way behind

Published on: 09/20/07

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — After officially declaring his candidacy, U.S. Senator Fred Thompson moves ahead of former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani in the race for the 2008 Republican presidential nomination. One-third (32%) of those who say they will vote in a Republican primary or caucus will vote for Thompson while 28 percent will vote for Giuliani. Much further back is John McCain, who continues his downward slide with 11 percent saying they would vote for the Arizona Senator, and 9 percent who say they would vote for former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney.

All this tells me is the GOP nomination for the moment is wide open...and that I was wrong in my long held assertion Hillary Clinton would eventually leave the race, or not even enter it in the first place.

The GOP nomination might be "wide open" as you say, but Fred is just getting started... hang on to your hat.

Has anyone else been wondering exactly why the usual conservative-hating rags such as AJC et al seem to be trying to hand the republican nomination to Thompson?

answer....they’d LOVE for him to be locked in as the nominee!

Per Drudge, Hillary is going to be on Sunday with Chris Wallace this weekend. That should be interesting. Also, Government Accountability Office - about 1200 employees - 2/3rds voted to join union. In McCain’s defense - he blasted Columbia for allowing the Iranian Emperor to speak there. Good person to do this as he had spoken there several years ago.

Did you read the article? All of their positive (R) comments were reserved for Giuliani. Their comments on Thompson were about whether this was "star power" and the implication that he cannot keep a lead if he actually has to campaign.

Thompson is one I’m very interested in, but haven’t made my mind up yet.

I want to see a debate with Thompson, Guiliani, Romney, McCain and Hunter. The rest are all second tier, some better equiped than others for the job.

And one, Ron Paul, is running for the wrong party nomination, for the wrong reasons, at the wrong time.

Yeah, she’ll win for sure. Obama is a Howard Dean wannabe. That’s why every GOP candidate, whether a “genuine” candidate or not, should be attacking her in EVERY speech, ALL the time.

What are you talking about? This article is about the results of a poll. Do you think the AJC falsified the poll results to support Thompson?

Sheesh!

Hmmmm.

I’ve learned sometimes its best to withhold your fire till the target is very very close. Hitting Hillary Clinton incessantly this early would lessen the impact in thirteen months, when it will really ‘count’.

Thats not to say the occasion shot across the bow is a bad thing....(chuckle)

I think explaining clearly where whoever the GOP candidate wants to lead the nation over the next four years is more important. If for no other reason than Hillary Clinton has a ton of things she has to overcome, both from a historical perspective (Senators running for President, for example) to her personal/political life these past 17 years.

In short, there will be time enough to go at her fast and hard, over and over again before all is said and done.

This thing's going to be back and forth for months.

March is when it's really time to take notice. (And that's when Hitlery's support is going to falter badly as well.)

He's tagged her and if he stays above the fray, she will be toast.

Hillary was always going to be the Democrat nominee. Most Democrats hate her, but she has them by the short hairs, er, FBI files, and will use any means necessary to demolish the competition, not excluding blackmail and arkancide.

Fred’s candidacy has been a familiar idea to conservatives ever since last spring, and they have been visiting his web site and listening to his comments. But few Democrats or ordinary non-political folks were aware that he was going to be in the race until he announced after Labor Day.

For that reason, Fred is doing well among committed conservative voters, but others are not yet really aware of him.

Committed Democrats, maybe a third of the nation, will vote for hillary even though most of them hate her. I have quite a few liberal friends, and not a single one of them is a hillary fan. They like Obama. But they will vote for her rather than a Republican when it comes down to it. So the Republicans need to find a candidate who appeals to the base while reaching out to the uncommitted. I think Fred’s the obvious person to do it.

I like what he says, but a large part of winning the Presidency in the modern political era is charisma, and Duncan is sorely lacking in that key ingredient, right or wrong.

I’d love to see him in a future GOP administration, but he’s pretty valuable where he is.

It'd be a riot if Chris gets sick and Brit takes over "Fox News Sunday" in his place. Would The Beast cancel?

“Okay, I’ll bite. Why is that?”

Thanks for asking.

Because he is just an overinflated hot-air balloon blowing in the wind with some pretty advertisements painted on the thin fabric....

easy pickings for the dem dirt machine, but they’ll for the most part hold their “overt” fire until such time as he might become locked in with the nomination.....this guy is no leader, his history is go-along-to-get-along, and that is precisely why the republican power-brokers tolerate him.

If I was a democrat/liberal I’d rather have Thompson to defeat than rotorooter, but OTOH, if roto got elected it wouldn’t be so bad for most citizen democrats (as distinct from PARTY democrats). IMO McC and ROM are already goners.

I want to vote for someone who will roll America back to America as we knew and loved it......but the repub power elite will not allow it.....in the end, they’re no better than most democrats.
