'Dream' For Illegals Gets a Wake-up Call
The Washington Times ^ | September 20, 2007 | Stephen Dinan

Sen. Richard J. Durbin, trying to win support to pass his proposal to give legal status to illegal aliens who go to college or join the military, said yesterday he has dropped from his plan a mandate for in-state tuition rates and is promising to impose an age limit to cut the number of people who would be eligible.

"If we can make these changes and win votes by doing so, then I'm prepared to," said Mr. Durbin, Illinois Democrat and Senate majority whip. "I think the ultimate goal is to give these young people a chance to show by their lives that they are deserving of status."

Known as the Dream Act, the proposal is the first major immigration fight since President Bush's comprehensive bill failed to pass the Senate earlier this year, but Republicans said he would doom the proposal if, as planned, Mr. Durbin tries to attach his proposal to the defense bill, which is on the Senate floor now.

"It won't survive cloture," said Sen. John Cornyn, Texas Republican, referring to the 60-vote threshold needed to pass contentious measures in the Senate.

Mr. Durbin wants students who were brought here before age 16, have been in the country at least five years, have graduated from high school and have completed two years of military service or college to have a path to citizenship.

He said he knows his proposal will have to meet the 60-vote threshold but said he still wants to try to find time for the debate on the defense bill. He has been telling senators to expect this fight since July, when the defense bill was first brought to the Senate floor.

My problem with the bill as I understand it is that, like the shamnesty bill, it confers an immediate official status to the illegals in question.

I would be inclined to consider a bill that gives some sort of preference to an illegal who was qualified, willing and able to serve in the armed forces for a tour of duty. Those who apply, though, who are not acceptable should be immediately deported. Maybe this would be like an American Foreign Legion?

Note: I just thought of this... please don't flame me until I've thought it through. Discussion welcome.

“If we can make these changes and win votes by doing so, then I’m prepared to,”. This is the key to the Democrats....”win votes”, not protect the country. They are fools....they even admit it.

Stike college and I could support the bill. We have an ample supply of home-grown educated dolts on our campuses. We do not need to import them. The bar to get into college is a whole lot lower than the bar for honorable military service.

I'll never understand why anyone thinks it's a good idea to fill our armed forces with foreign nationals.

Ideally I want all the illegals deported. But, why on earth is citizenship even an option here? They’ve violated our soverignty, been a tremendous drain on our economy. And illegals kill 9000 Americans a year.
If you want to give illegals who volunteer for our armed forces a path to citizenship I do think that is reasonable. And I could live with a compromise allowing the 20 million illegals to stay, so long as they are not allowed to become citizens, and are not eligble for welfare. Either they support themselves with a job or a sponsor or they’re gone.

I would be tempted to support it as well, if I thought it would stop there. But the open borders side has shown they only need a foot in the door and they'll take a mile.

NO compromise. Illegal is illegal.

There is a big difference between filling our armed forces with foreign nationals and letting those who are really Americans at heart volunteer.

Do the names Baron von Steuben and the Marquis de Lafayette mean anything to you?

Your examples are kind of like Monday morning quarterbacking. In this day and age there are no guarantees that anyone that volunteered is just a good ol' American at heart. It's possible that the terrorists would realize that they no longer have to pay for flight schools in Florida when they can just join the Air Force and get free training and access to military installations to boot.

The Minuteman and Grassfire.org did have a listing of all senators and representatives complete with phone and fax numbers. They will also send letters to all senators and reps for you for I believe $60. Also Congress.org does a weekly update on all bills, their status, etc. washingtonpost.com had an article called “Division Problem” comment responder NPagliuca listed senators “Still Waffling” and those that voted yes. Problem was that the “yes” votes were mixed with the “nos” and were color coded so you really couldn’t tell. Freedom Watch also has an 800 number 888-362-2813 - message says they will refer you to an operator who can connect you to your Congressman’s office. Their current issue is the War in Iraq but I would think that once you get through you can talk to their office about anything you want.

“...legal status to illegal aliens who go to college or join the military”

I have no problem with someone who joins the military gaining citizenship.....the day AFTER they have their honorable discharge. Legal status for going to college? No freakin’ way.
