Man Shot By Police Is AWOL Soldier

(AP) ABERDEEN, Md. Military officials say a man shot by Aberdeen police is a soldier who had been away from Aberdeen Proving Ground without permission since last month.

Army officials say 22-year-old Private Evan Parker, of Pittsford, N.Y., had been AWOL since late August.

Aberdeen police say officers called to a disturbance at a motel Sunday night encountered Parker and when they learned his military status, they took him to the base.

When officers returned to the motel around 11 a.m. Monday for a suspicious person call, Parker had returned.

Police say he displayed a gun and waved it threateningly when the officer ordered him to drop the weapon. The officer fired several shots, hitting Parker.

Police say Parker was carrying a gun that shoots rubber projectiles.

Parker was taken to Shock Trauma, where he was listed in guarded condition last night.

He’s in big trouble.

The MPs at the base that let him wander off again should be in even bigger trouble.

The private should be called an "officer" also. All police are called "officers" regardless of rank (originally a PC way not to discriminate against females), so every time a perp gets caught, the "officer" arrests him. Some smart lawyer is going to pick up on this newspeak some day.

Technically, he’s a private, not an “officer”. Until he is either a “Commissioned Officer” or a “non-commissioned officer”, he’s a private. /shrug

If he's a non-commissioned officer, he's still an officer and should be presented as so. Calling every policeman an officer is PC-speak, to avoid calling a female policeman a policewoman and puts the perp in an immediate negative light (as a private). "officer" connotates the ability to make an executive decision, something very difficult for those who go by the book.

What do you call a policeman who is a Captain? An officer officer? I would only say that after too many beers! I assure you I would not be operating a vehicle.

IF he were a non-commissioned officer, I’d agree. Unfortunately, his rank is “Private”, which is NOT “non-commissioned officer”. If I see a rank on a police officer’s sleeve or collar and must contact him, I do call him by his RANK, I don’t say “Officer Smith”, instead I say “Sergent Smith” or “Captain” or whatever. However, I know most of my ranks and spent 26 years in the service, so I’m different from most folks.

Now I have to call my son this afternoon. While stationed in Germany he has talked a room mate into going AWOL just because he was sick of him whining.

So NCOs in positions of authority can be said to have control or charge rather than command per se, although the use of the word "command" to describe any use of authority is widespread and often official?

Your point on the private not an NCO is well taken and I really should have not ventured that forth.
