They didn’t know what an AK-47 was, they had in mind “firearms just like the military uses”. In my mind that means I ought to able to have anything the military has. Period. No, I don’t want a nuke. Wouldn’t do me a lot of good... unless this were planet of the apes or something (/grin)

Late-model military rifles were precisely what they had in mind. Rifles weren't used much militarily, though I'm sure they were included in what Madison et al. had in mind. The "assault weapon" of the day would have been a smoothbore musket, which could fire more than twice as many rounds per minute as a typical rifle.
