They didn’t know what an AK-47 was, they had in mind “firearms just like the military uses”. In my mind that means I ought to able to have anything the military has. Period. No, I don’t want a nuke. Wouldn’t do me a lot of good... unless this were planet of the apes or something (/grin)

"I don't think think the founding fathers had AK-47s in mind." Okay with that logic lets go back to printing presses. I’m sure the founding fathers did not have computers in mind. The Constitution is an anti-government document. The public must stay armed to stay free!!

Late-model military rifles were precisely what they had in mind.

Rifles weren't used much militarily, though I'm sure they were included in what Madison et al. had in mind. The "assault weapon" of the day would have been a smoothbore musket, which could fire more than twice as many rounds per minute as a typical rifle.
