Close Assad aide reiterates that Syria will respond to Israeli attack (Debka)

Minister of Expatriates, Butheina Shabaan, who is generally regarded as President Bashar Assad’s personal mouthpiece, made this statement Tuesday, Sept 18.

It was a replay of the one first issued by a junior official on Sept. 6, together with the initial accusation that Israeli warplanes had invaded Syrian air space. The pugnacious minister also dismissed the reports published on the event as fiction and a pack of lies. Despite its repetitiveness, DEBKAfile’s American and Israeli sources interpret Shabaan’s statement’s coming now as important because it appears to indicate that the Syrian president, after due consideration, has come down on the side of a military response some time soon.

What I am curious about is how the IDF/IAF made Syria's air defenses go black prior to the 9/6 raid.

I know for Desert Storm it was a virus in the printers attached to the system that shut down Iraq's air defenses.

That will be the biggest mistake yet if they attack Israel. The other shoe is about to drop.

The timing of the Shabaan statement is suggestive because it came three days before Yom Kippur which falls this year on Friday night and Saturday, Sept. 21-22. Syria would find it easier to surprise Israel in the hours of its complete shutdown for the Day of Atonement, just as the Arab armies succeeded in doing 34 years ago.

I seriously doubt that Syria is going to surprise Israel, which learned its lesson in 1973, especially since Israeli surveillance and intelligence capabilities have exponentially improved over the past few years.

I know that not everyone on this board is a Christian, but for those of us who follow Biblical Prophecy...God doesn’t suffer fools who promise destruction to Israel lightly.

One of the options is an attack on Yom Kippur to obtains suprise.

That’ll be interesting. We know how well that worked out for them before.

I can't vouch for Debka, but this part sounds right: Damascus holds at least four proactive options for a response:

1. A sudden pinpoint attack on the Golan and attempt to seize hold of a small enclave or Israeli military position for several hours.

2. A multiple casualty terrorist attack on the Golan, toward which Syrian intelligence and armed forces have been training for several months.

3. Indirect action against an Israeli target – either through an incursion by one of the Lebanese-based Palestinian groups under Syria’s thumb for a massive shooting operation, or through attacks on Israeli or Jewish targets outside the Middle East by external Hizballah or Palestinian cells.

4. A Syrian strike against a strategic target inside Israel...

If they choose number 4, I think they might get a push back that is worse than the original strike. Better for Syria to suck it up and consider itself lucky.

American sources report targeted an “agricultural” nuclear site in northern Syria

OK, I give up; just exactly what is an "agricultural" nuclear site?

4. A Syrian strike against a strategic target inside Israel, similar to the Israeli attack which American sources report targeted an “agricultural” nuclear site in northern Syria in the first week of September. Our military sources do not believe Syria has the necessary capability for such action.

All of these scenarios entail great risk for Syria. Israel will know the origination and respond directly at Syria. The result will be to enflame the region to the point of another armed conflict.

Where is Egypt in this? Where are the Saudis and the other Arab states? We know what Iran will do and the response from Israel should any of the above happen might give them the excuse they need to hit Iran first.

Now, a lot of the Arab states are trading partners with Israel, and that makes for a stabilizing influence, but it will not stop any terrorist support that may come from them.

The other side of this coin is if Iran and Israel get involved with each other with the US forces in Iraq in the middle. We would support Israel, but that would mean open-ended warfare against Syria and Iran.

Call me what you will but a couple thoughts crossed my mind;

1) the “incident” that is sparking this was essentially a proxy strike by the US. US munitions, intel, coordination of air forces, etc. all point that way for me.

2) the Pelois and Kucinich visits to Assad imply that they know that something larger is in the works and they are hoping to assert dissention for their base before the other shoe does drop. As time passes, I think the light shed on their actions will expose them as de facto agents of Syria.

Just saying.

.....what is an “agricultural” nuclear site.....

Seeds are irradiated to prevent fungal attack. It is a Syrian breakthrough in the production of the wheat strains native to the area since time immemorial and the earliest known agriculture.

In recent time, fungal infections have come to the area and must be eliminated.

(hows that)

I am not sure which would be more surprising. That the syrians would do nothing or that they would do something.

The dead silence of the rest of the sunni arab world — the weighs against bashir doing anything but this may give him problems at home for being viewed as weak rather than prudent.

Say what?

Yep, a virus in the printer firmware. Iraq bought some components for its air defenses from France and it was there that the CIA modified a firmware ROM to shut down the computer it was attached to when it made the request to print. Pretty sneaky. Made in the USA!

You got that right. And He expects America to come to her defense. We’re joined at the hip for a purpose. When we deny that purpose, we’re toast.
