MoveOn.org: Not Exactly Fair And Balanced
The Bulletin ^ | 09/19/2007 | Michael P. Tremoglie

MoveOn.org is drawing fire (no pun intended) for its attack of Gen. David Petraeus, commander of the military forces in Iraq, who recently gave a report and congressional testimony about the conditions in Iraq.

The George Soros-funded, left-wing, pro-Democratic Party organization ran an expensive full-page ad in the New York Times excoriating Petraeus. The title was "General Petraeus or General Betray-Us? Cooking the Books for the White House." The first sentence was "General Petraeus is a military man constantly at war with the facts." The ad went on to claim, "Every independent report on the ground situation in Iraq shows that the surge strategy has failed." It referred to three reports as evidence of their claim. One was the GAO report of Sept. 4.

Yet page 2 of the report clearly states, "These results do not diminish the courageous efforts of coalition forces and progress that has been made in several areas, including Anbar Province."

The ad also references the Aug. 23 National Intelligence Estimate (NIE) as evidence that the surge is failing and Petraeus is lying.

Yet the NIE contained a section titled Analytic Caution, which said, "Driven largely by the accelerating pace of tribal engagement and the increasing tempo of Coalition operations, developments in Iraq are unfolding more rapidly and with greater complexity today than when we completed our January NIE. ... There have been measurable but uneven improvements in Iraq's security situation since our last National Intelligence Estimate on Iraq in January 2007. The steep escalation of rates of violence has been checked for now, and overall attack levels across Iraq have fallen during seven of the last nine weeks. Coalition forces, working with Iraqi forces, tribal elements, and some Sunni insurgents, have reduced al-Qaida in Iraq's capabilities, restricted its freedom of movement, and denied it grassroots support in some areas."

Since the surge began in February, according to the NIE, there have been improvements in Iraq's security. So the NIE actually contradicts MoveOn.org's assertion. MoveOn.org also claims that the Jones Report (the Sept. 6 report by the Independent Commission of the Security Forces in Iraq, chaired by Gen. James Jones) states the surge is failing. Yet, this report states, "The Commission concurs with U.S., Coalition, and Iraqi experts that the Iraqi army is capable of taking over an increasing amount of day-to-day combat responsibilities from Coalition forces."

Of course, none of this should be a shock to anyone who is not a left-wing Democrat. MoveOn.org has always had problems with the facts.

MoveOn.org's ads have received criticism from the nonpartisan Factcheck.org of the Annenberg School of Communications at the University of Pennsylvania.

Factcheck reviews the veracity of political advertisements. Here is what Factcheck has said about some past MoveOn.org ads:

* MoveOn.org launched a false TV ad in the districts of several House members, claiming through images and words that President Bush plans to cut Social Security benefits nearly in half (Feb. 1, 2005).

* MoveOn.org Political Action began airing ads attacking four Republican senators. The ads clearly misrepresent the stands of three of the targeted senators (Feb. 9, 2007).

* Moveon.org Voter Fund falsely attacked Bush (Aug. 25, 2004).

MoveOn.org is definitely not a credible source of information. How ironic it is that the Democratic Party presidential candidates worship at MoveOn.org's altar yet will not participate in debates sponsored by Fox News.

Tells you a little something about Democrats, does it not?

it was a hollow, corrupt, disillusioned shell of a party - ripe for takeover by a virulent strain of liberalism. I have to think the Dem's will eventually pay for being dragged to the ugly, anti-American left at the ballot box.

I agree, but I'm hoping that America doesn't have to pay for the sins of a sick and morally corrupt party. If it is allowed to play itself out, then much damage will be done.

So how come they control Congress, about half of the states, nearly every big city, most people are registered Democrats and are poised to control the White House?

You need to get real here pal and understand the problem.

Its a fleeting and fractured majority though. Put in power more due to dissatisfaction with republicans. If usa had real choices reflective of the people Republicans would be majority and there would be a split between moderates and total peacenik wellfare leftists (slightly favoring moderates).
