Who's Afraid of Voter ID?
Wall Street Journal ^ | 15 September 2007 | Editorial Staff

Last week a federal judge in Georgia upheld a state law requiring photo identification to vote. Courts have upheld similar laws in Indiana, Michigan, Mississippi and Arizona. The trend is encouraging. And as U.S. District Judge Harold Murphy noted in his 159-page ruling, arguments that these laws disenfranchise minorities don't hold up to scrutiny.

"Voters who lack photo ID undoubtedly exist somewhere," wrote Judge Murphy, "but the fact that plaintiffs, in spite of their efforts, have failed to uncover anyone 'who can attest to the fact that he/she will be prevented from voting' provides significant support for a conclusion that the photo ID requirement does not unduly burden the right to vote."

The ruling is also significant because Judge Murphy, a Democrat, had rejected a previous version of the law as unconstitutional, likening it to a "poll tax." The version he signed off on last week provides free photo identification to anyone who requests it. And voters who show up at polls without proper ID are permitted to cast provisional ballots. A decision upholding Indiana's voter ID law is being appealed to the Supreme Court.

Who’s afraid? Criminals or others that want to vote illegally and have something to hide. Voting is a privilege of legal citizens.

So long as "Provisional Ballots" are allowed, without ID, the dead, illegal, convicted felons, and phantom/cartoon character votes will still be cast.

As much complaining and whining as we had in Ohio in 2004 about "theft", ACORN continues to manufacture thousands of votes, and there's no way Democrats want Voter ID to stifle their "voter" base.

But - but - but -—
Hellary, and any DimRat for that matter, is counting on hordes of illegal voters. What if all those falsely registered voters with fictional residential addresses, and voting tombstones, et cetera, had to supplied with ID cards? A totally unreasonable burden.

Ask B-1 Bob Dornan...in fact ask Newt Gingrich...
when Loretta Sanchez came to Orange County in 1996, dropped her married name to patronize the Hispanic vote and rented an apartment in the district so she could run in the district; that wasn’t enough,
Sanchez’s hubbie was arrested for tearing down Bob Dornan’s campaign signs and just to be on the safe side; illegal aliens were escorted to the voting polls and when the final tally was made; Sanchez won the election...by a few hundred votes
Didn’t matter that Dornan protested the illegitimacy of the election and took the matter up with the leader Newt Gingrich & the GOP majority...
they didn’t raise a finger to investigate the election and as the saying goes...the rest is history.

One doesn’t need an ID to vote in CA and the GOP became the Gelding Old Party in 1996. And it hasn’t found the courage to face the Lefties in the ‘Rat party to this day.

No, we won’t get voter ID until the GOP gets a testicle implant.

This may be moving on scedule to the SC that would put an end to the nonsense of voter suppression before 09 election. I used to drive a neighbor to welfare offices and she carried a manilla envelop;e stuffed with documentation that she thought she might need to prove elligibility for their precious programs. It is all bogus.

The only ones who would object to voter ID are wanted criminals and those planning to commit voter fraud. No one else.

Speaking of wasted political capital, this topic is
another area where GW and the GOP dropped the ball.
There is now no chance of meaningful electoral
reform for the 2008 cycle.

If the dems get the WH & Congress, you can bet that
they won’t let the opportunity pass to institute
“electoral reforms”, and they will ensure that 2008
will have been our last even semi-credible election.

Oh, I'm sorry but this is almost funny. Louisiana gets slammed for so many things, one of many being our corrupt politicians - and deservedly so, and er, we all know about the Katrina thing... BUT, I live in a small town and when we go to vote, be it city, state or national elections, I have to show my driver's license with my picture on it and sign in. Now, mind you, the people who work the voting booths are good people who know me by name and face, I see them ALL THE TIME and we have known each other for years. But, I still have to show them my I.D. I can't believe other states don't require this.

You’ll never see photo I.D. in Washington State. The ‘rats will never allow it and they control everything in this state.

Put Voter ID card stations in all welfare, social security and DMV offices.

It should be easy to do. Run a program, print it out, laminate it and hand it to the person. All they have to do is show a Social Security card.

No disenfranchisement.

Why are you all getting upset about people having to or not having to show ID when they vote? That is like closing the gate after the cows are all out.

The real problem is that it is Federal law that you cannot make anyone prove they are a citizen when they register to vote and nobody seems to care. Especially the members of our one party system in Congress & the 2 Presidents who passed these laws.

one time I was chatting with the lady who worked at the jewlery counter at Walmart. I said “you must see lots of different types of people including the poor. Have you ever had any not have an ID to show you?”

she said “NEVER, they all have ID.”

this is the most bogus arguement!

At a very minimum the Arizona statute requires proof of citizenship. And these laws are state laws, not federal. And to the other poster, the Arizona law has been through the 9th Circus once, and SCOTUS smacked it down. The tide is clearly going in the right direction.
