Jim Moran's Mouth, Again (Much Worse Than "Maccaca")

What is it with Jim Moran? The nine-term Democratic congressman from Northern Virginia can't seem to keep his head on straight when it comes to talking about Iraq and the reasons we have ended up over there.

In the run-up to the March 2003 invasion, during an event at a Reston church sponsored by a peace coalition, Moran said: "If it were not for the strong support of the Jewish community for this war with Iraq, we would not be doing this." Not stopping there, he added, "The leaders of the Jewish community are influential enough that they could change the direction of where this is going, and I think they should."

In an interview published in the September-October issue of Tikkun magazine, Moran said that the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) "has pushed this war from the beginning . . . They are so well organized, and their members are extraordinarily powerful -- most of them are quite wealthy -- they have been able to exert power."

Moran back tracks some, but you can bet that he will be easily re-elected.

Irish-American politicians have a disproportionate influence over Massachusetts politics. In fact, Irish-American politicians have had a disproportionate historical influence over big-city politics and the American North East. Irish- Americans have had a disproportionate influence among America's police forces. Irish-Americans have a disproportionate influence in the Federal Bureau of investigation.

Are these statements somehow anti-Irish? Even if some of them are not true are they anti-Irish? Does it make the utterer a bigot? If some of these observations are not true does that make the utterer a bigot?

I believe the answer to all these questions is self evidently, "no."

Then why is one an anti-Semite for making similar judgments about a different religious/ethnic group involved in American politics? Moran is an indecent man but why is he necessarily an anti-Semite? Would he be an anti-Cuban if he decried the Cuban-Americans influence on our Cuban policy? Would he be anti-Chinese if he supported Taiwan against mainland China? Were all those liberals in the 1940s and 50s who campaigned against Generalissimo Shang Kai-shek for involving us with the Taiwan government, bigoted against the Chinese?

Are we to be foreclosed from comment on the manifestly wretched state of the African-American society in our inner cities?

Where does this end? He who climbs to the high ground of political correctness first wins the debate-is that where it is to end ?

I am SOOOOO glad I moved out of this SOB's district. None of my friends in Alexandria ever voted for him, but Arlington is a liberal bastion. He is a disgrace as a Congressman and as a human being. Easily one of the worst people holding public office in America today. And if we ever get rid of him, his likely successor is his brother Brian, who is in the General Assembly.

The problem is finding any Republican with stature to run against him. All the Alexandria and Arlington council members and all of the local General Assembly members are Democrats.

Republicans should make an effort to force Mark Warner to disassociate himself from Moran and his anti-semitic attitudes. Warner's home is in Moran's district. That could be funny if the GOP has the stones to do it.
