Keyes looks to rescue GOP, announces run for president

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – After two previous runs for U.S. president, former Reagan diplomat Alan Keyes has announced he's again seeking the White House in the 2008 election, and he'll take part in Monday night's Republican presidential debate here.

Keyes told syndicated radio host Janet Parshall he's "unmoved" by the lack of moral courage shown by the other candidates, among whom he sees no standout who articulates the "key kernel of truth that must, with courage, be presented to our people."

He added, "The one thing I've always been called to do is to raise the standard ... of our allegiance to God and His authority that has been the foundation stone of our nation's life" – and he decried the lack of "forthright, clear, and clarion declaration" from the current crop of presidential contenders.

As a result, Keyes said, "We're putting together an effort that's not going to be like anything before, because it's going to be entirely based on citizen action. We're going to be challenging people to take a pledge for America's revival," and elevate them from spectators in the political arena to participants.

I guess the only thing missing is a woman.

I like to listen to Keyes when he speaks, however that doesn’t say I would vote for him.

I welcome him into the race. He won't hurt the conservative cause.
Too true. He will be an instant magnet for the one-percenters as the unelectable of choice!

Yes, he means well, AND would make a great President BUT he will never get elected - to anything. Our loss actually.

I don’t understand why someone else would announce to run now. They already missed some of the deadlines to get on the primary ballots in states that moved their primaries up.

I think he is self employed and self supporting. This will raise his profile agains and enhance his other ventures.

I am a fat lady, and I am not singing yet, are you? This is a lot of fun!

He’s also no longer the most irritating, self-absorbed pedant in the race.

I really Alan Keyes, and voted for him during the last primaries, but after his run for the Senate where he and the GOP knew he had a better chance of being hit by a bus when winning that seat, he lost a bunch of credibility.

The GOP used him and he let them.

Well yes, Keyes was a sacrificial lamb in Illinois, hardly a fair test. And he is eloquent. But really. He has to do something besides run for president every four years. In 2000 I opined that he should start by moving to a safe district and run for congress, build a resume. If he had done that then, he might have run for the Senate this year, and by 2012 might actually have some validity as a candidate. But that would have been too much work and not enough glory I guess.

What kind of presidential debate includes a candidate who has not even officially filed to run? And a candidate who hasn’t qualified to participate in any other real debate? (John Cox?)

The debate, moderated by World Net Daily, (home of the hair restoration and miracle medical secrets the government doesn’t want you to know ads), will not include Rudy Giuliani, John McCain, Mitt Romney and Fred Thompson, who declined to participate.

I think he would be an excellent Secretary of State.

I so agree! Can you imagine how he would shake up foggy bottom? Not to mention the murderous united nations. Man that would be good.

“Keyes was beat out by a Democrat called Obama in a majorly Democratic State .. Illinois, I would hardly call it a clobbering. I look forward to hearing Keyes in Debate, he is eloquent”

You are correct, and I also look forward to hearing Keyes in debate.

Thank you.
