Keyes looks to rescue GOP, announces run for president

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – After two previous runs for U.S. president, former Reagan diplomat Alan Keyes has announced he's again seeking the White House in the 2008 election, and he'll take part in Monday night's Republican presidential debate here.

Keyes told syndicated radio host Janet Parshall he's "unmoved" by the lack of moral courage shown by the other candidates, among whom he sees no standout who articulates the "key kernel of truth that must, with courage, be presented to our people."

He added, "The one thing I've always been called to do is to raise the standard ... of our allegiance to God and His authority that has been the foundation stone of our nation's life" – and he decried the lack of "forthright, clear, and clarion declaration" from the current crop of presidential contenders.

As a result, Keyes said, "We're putting together an effort that's not going to be like anything before, because it's going to be entirely based on citizen action. We're going to be challenging people to take a pledge for America's revival," and elevate them from spectators in the political arena to participants.

Ron Paul no longer in last place!

Wow! This bumps Duncan Hunter all the way up to second-to-last!!!

Actually, Paul's technically right. It's not constitutional to fight an undeclared war.

Actually he's wrong. Congress has the power to declare war but there is no specific format required to declare war. The only requirement is it be approved by the legislature. Congress did approve war against Iraq in October of 2002 per the link below.

Joint Resolution to Authorize the Use of United States Armed Forces Against Iraq

As Dr. Walter E. Williams has pointed out, secession is the ultimate mechanism for enforcing the Constitution's limittations on Federal power. If you take away teh right to secede, then the states have lost their ultimate weapon and the Federal government can de facto do anything it wants with NO limits.

The Founding Father's never intended to give the right of secession.

The 10th Amendment made it clear what the limits of Federal responsibilities were-nothing explicity granted.

The power of the States to limit Federal intrusion lie in the Senate, which was then elected by the State Legislatives and was to represent each State.

What undermined Federalism was the direct election of Senators.

Suspended habeas corpus, arrested and deported a member of the U.S. Congress form Ohio for criticizing his war policy (President Davis sent him back), and undertook other actions that trampled all over the Constitutional limitations on government. Lincoln was the first Big Government President. He paved the way for Wilson, FDR, LBJ, Klintoon, etc.

The nation was fighting a rebellion and thus, habeas corpus could legally be suspended.

Lincoln did far more to defend individual liberties during the war than Jeff Davis did.

The Government went back to its constitutional limits after the war.

And 4 million human beings were freed who were not granted any Constitutional rights and were being denied the basic rights that were stated very clearly in the Declaration of Independence.

Dr. Keyes had my support in 2000, would’ve this year too if not for Duncan Hunter.

Thank you. That’s very gracious.

I’ve never been one that worried much about competitive primaries. They help the party, not hurt it, in most cases.

Dr. Keyes’ involvement elevates the debate, and raises the standard.

I can tell you with certainty that Dr. Keyes highly respects Duncan Hunter, and would support him with all his might were he the nominee.

Don’t pay any attention to anything the Democrat Media says. They just want to divide and conquer us.

Listen only to what Alan says.

This is going to be interesting. I can only imagine the lack of coverage Dr. Keyes is going to get, the way he’s going to be portrayed when he does get coverage and of course what “Republican” pundits are going to have to say about him. As much as I respect Dr. Keyes, I just don’t understand him running at this point, to me it kind of takes more of the focus off the “lesser knowns” running. I am going to watch the debates with a little more interest now, that’s for sure and I hope what Dr. Keyes candidacy does is allow whomever the nominee is going to be to take a step back and say, “Am I a true conservative?,” because Alan Keyes is a true conservative.

Alan moved to and ran for the Illinois US Senate at the request of the Chairman of the Illinois GOP. To label him as a "carpetbagger" is not really deserved.

If you will recall Jack Ryan was running against Obama. Jack got caught up in a sex scandal and dropped out. No Illinois republican had the balls to step up and take Ryan's place, hence they went outside the state fo a candidate.

Exactly . . . but Keyes was completely wrong-footed over the fact that he was not in fact familiar with the state in the way a long-time resident would be. When asked why he was running in IL, he should have blasted the Democrats for having fished in troubled waters, getting a friendly judge to unseal the records of a messy divorce. Talk about intruding on private life!! It was completely unjustified, and precisely counter to stated Democrat principles.

Keyes was in a position which was indefensible in ordinary terms, and the only possible approach was to go on the offensive over the reasons why the IL Republicans were forced to consider an unconventional candidate such as himself. But instead he went on the defensive - and, quite naturally, got swamped. At least that's how it looked from here (Long Island, NY).

Next Gingrich will announce that he will run. Then what are we gonna do?

Join his campaign and help him win?

Oh, I’ll agree with you. I’m just saying that the name calling, ie, carpetbagger, was and is totally uncalled for. Keyes went to Illinois at the request of the Illinois GOP. How he handled his campaign is a different story.

The only reason to have Keyes on a ticket is to counter balance the black vote Obama will get. Unfortunately, Keyes won’t draw any black votes because he is too “white”. Keyes will only appeal to guilt ridden whites and evangelical Christians.

However, there may be a few evangelical black votes out there.

“And for the cynical — Alan doesn’t make money on his elections.”

Seriously, you didn’t just say that? Alan had himself on the payroll of his last campaign and paid himself out of donations.

No candidate EVER does that. The brazenness of it surprised even his supporters, but continued questioning about his campaign finances have been mt with silence.

“I don’t understand why someone else would announce to run now. They already missed some of the deadlines to get on the primary ballots in states that moved their primaries up.’

Because it’s not about the Presidency, it’s about the lottery.

If an articulate ideological conservative is what America wants/wanted Keyes would have been elected president long ago.

It will be fun watching him intellectually b$tchslap most of this completely underwelming field around, but in the end, he doesn’t have a prayer.

But will be fun to watch.

The comments on this post have become typical of what I can expect from FreeRepublic, and it is exactly the reason I've not been posting regularly in years.

We all talk a good game, but when push comes to shove many in this thread alone will cast aside reason and reflection in exchange for invective and misrepresentation. If I can only count the charges being leveled against someone who has dared to challenge those people and institutions no one else dared to challenge!

We should be reminded that it is not the candidate's job to win elections. It is our job to put the person in office whom we feel would be most likely to advance our causes. If we do not, we will lose, even if the candidate we "supported" is elected. Whatever the case, we will wind up with exactly the sort of government we deserve.

Those of you who prefer Duncan Hunter (or any other conservative candidate) to Alan Keyes respectfully, I readily acknowledge that we are on the same side. I look forward to seeing what happens when these two are in the same room. I expect them to agree more than disagree.

To the rest of you who feel compelled to serve lies about or otherwise misrepresent the circumstances surrounding a good man, you ought to be ashamed.

Here's a smattering of lies offered so far on this post that I was unfortunate enough to skim:

  1. Keyes pays himself out of campaign donations. First, it's false. He did it once and only once during his run for the Senate in Maryland. Second, it's perfectly legal. Third, it should remain legal and be considered acceptable. Regular folks (people who are not incumbents) must often quit their jobs in order to to run a campaign, which completely dries up their income source. Insinuating malfeasance for garnering a salary for running a campaign is not only wrong, it also ensures only the rich will ever be able to run.
  2. Keyes dissed Mary Cheney. False again. In an interview, Keyes was asked how he could support the Republican ticket even though some disagreements exist between himself and the administration, including on the issue of "gay marriage." Keyes explained that his support allowed room for disagreements with the Vice President over secondary issues. When asked for his defense of marriage, Keyes provided it clearly, honestly, and in a way I'd gather a good portion of Keyes' critics would agree with. During the course of his explanation, he pointed out that we create institutions in law because there is a compelling benefit to society (such as to provide rules and procedures dealing with the consequences of procreation), not just individuals, and that the advocates of gay marriage are concerned about what they can get for themselves. This, Keyes explained quite correctly, was "hedonism." Asked if this applied to Mary Cheney, he gave the only honest answer available. "By definition." Hedonism is not invective, by the way; it's a term that describes a philosophical belief that goes back to ancient Greece.
  3. Keyes is the cause of Obama's success. False. Obama was already being promoted in Illinois and in the U.S. after his keynote address at the Democratic National Convention. Keyes came into the picture with less than three months to campaign, and he was welcomed by a hostile press and liberals, moderates, and even conservatives all too willing to believe such press.
  4. Keyes is a carpetbagger. False. The concept of a carpetbagger was started after the Civil War, when folks from the North were imposed upon the people of the South as condition for reconciliation. Keyes was invited by the Republican Party of Illinois. He acceptance of this nomination and the positions brought to bare by the debates that ensued may very well give the GOP the sort of ammunition they need to expose Obama as a hard-left socialist. Say what you will of Keyes' willingness to serve that role, just as long as you thank him when Obama is defeated.
  5. Keyes supports reparations. False. Although I do question the wisdom of answering this question with anything other than a resolute "no," Keyes simply was reflecting on a hypothetical scenario. However, what he really supports, what he has always supported (at least since 1999 when I first became aware of him), is the abolition of the income tax for all Americans, not just descendants of slaves. It was not a "plan" as breathlessly touted in the media.
  6. Keyes kicked his daughter out of his house for being a lesbian. His daughter was an adult, and he had no legal or moral obligation to either house her or pay for her college. I would argue as a parent that if a child behaves in a way that the parent deems harmful, it is the duty of the parent, as one who loves the child, to not enable that child's destructive behavior. I'm sure she can come home when she wishes to abandon her behavior, and Keyes will be overjoyed to assist her. First, though, she must make that decision.
  7. Keyes owes a ton of money from his last campaign. False. His campaign owing money is of no consequence to Keyes personally. However, last I heard (which was over a month ago) his campaign debt was something like $80,000 and falling. I wouldn't be surprised if he settled already with the FEC. That's certainly not a large amount compared with the amount raised throughout the course of a high-profile political campaign, especially one that required one candidate make up a lot of ground in less than three months against a hostile press that seemed to go out of its way to spread lies about Keyes (lies that keep conveniently showing up here).

That's the short list. I'm really disappointed in this board, but only because I had been holding out hope that enough reasonable, passionate people remained to have an intelligent discussion about the issues at stake. The attacks on Keyes' character are out of line and undeserved.

Once again, assuming this is still a board that appreciates truth and conservatism, all we really seem to covet is power. As long as this is true, except by happenstance, we will always have a government that works in the interests of their own power, not the people's will. And we still will deserve the government we get.

If you support a different candidate on principle and refuse to be swayed by the lies posted in this thread, then this post does not apply to you.
