Keyes looks to rescue GOP, announces run for president

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – After two previous runs for U.S. president, former Reagan diplomat Alan Keyes has announced he's again seeking the White House in the 2008 election, and he'll take part in Monday night's Republican presidential debate here.

Keyes told syndicated radio host Janet Parshall he's "unmoved" by the lack of moral courage shown by the other candidates, among whom he sees no standout who articulates the "key kernel of truth that must, with courage, be presented to our people."

He added, "The one thing I've always been called to do is to raise the standard ... of our allegiance to God and His authority that has been the foundation stone of our nation's life" – and he decried the lack of "forthright, clear, and clarion declaration" from the current crop of presidential contenders.

As a result, Keyes said, "We're putting together an effort that's not going to be like anything before, because it's going to be entirely based on citizen action. We're going to be challenging people to take a pledge for America's revival," and elevate them from spectators in the political arena to participants.

If my memory serves me right, it's the same thing Carrol Burnet(?) did to her addicted son. She called it tough love.

Alan is correct: if you live under my roof, you live by my rules. Children that don't, "inherit the wind". Rightly so.

I know he can’t win, however he will out debate ANYONE who is up there. He has Very strong conservative principles and can articulate them very well.

Keyes to run for Republican nomination on a ‘reparations for desecendants of slaves’ platform.

Sorry Alan, you lost touch with conservatism in that botched Senate run.

His candidacy contributed absolutely nothing to the national debate.

Give him credit, he ran for senator at the request of the party. He exposed Obama and educated a lot of people in the process and conducted himself well.

But a state that elects and supports the likes of Durbin and Obama has an education deficiency, and Alan did what he could to correct that. And that's good, much better than sitting the election out.

Why does he constantly want to make a fool of himself? Me must have some sort of complex. Shouldn’t someone take him aside? A friend or something and tell him...HE SUCKS!!!!

ALan Keyes is like Newt. He says some real smart things, but overall, is an idiot.

Didn’t Keyes also reject his daughter for being a lesbian? So much for love the sinner, hate the sin.

He did. Says his daughter is dead. I could not imagine doing that to my three sons no matter what their behavior is. He must be something else. He probably put a lot of pressure on his kids.

A lot of you people need to grow up, attacking a great conservative voice like Alan Keyes.

If you like another candidate, then go on and promote that candidate to your heart’s content, instead of mindless, backstabbing bickering.

With all the angry divisiveness going on around here, I don’t think we can ever come together to back the eventual nominee and defeat Hitlary Clinton.

Kicking them out is fine. Telling your daughter that you are dead to me is a much different situation.

That only means that Keyes has never failed to get something done as a public official while paleoPaulie has never gotten anything done as one. If Keyes joins paleoPaulie on the "declaration of war" fantasy, then he will prove no better than paleoPaulie's minivote in the primaries. At least, Keyes is reliably pro-life in deed as well as in holy pictures. His speaking style is a preachy toothache, though.

Of course, Dr. Demento is an all-purpose toothache.

I supported the eminently unelectable Ambassador Keyes in the Republican primary against George W. Bush. I won’t be making that mistake again.

But I’m sure he is worthy of a cabinet-level post in a Thompson Administrarion.

The qwarion now is, what does his announcement do to the already dismal prospects of cellar dwellers Hunter, Tancredo and Brownback?

ALan Keyes is like Newt. He says some real smart things, but overall, his audience does not include idiots needed to win. Nevertheless, he will task those candidates whose position(s) on issues is contrary to a healthy, prosperous, constitutional 'America'.

And that's good!

Its true other issues are important. But its a philosophical issue that informs our understanding of what it means to be a decent society. If the right to life is not absolute, are the rest of our rights safe? How we answer that question will tell us how secure the Bill Of Rights will be for future generations. I happen to be believe our party's pro-life stand is at one with the Declaration Of Independence and the American concept of limited government and freedom.

Abe would never get nominated today and a good thing too! He did enough damage in a month more than one term. McGovern is most like Lincoln. Reagan was most like Andrew Jackson. The roles of the parties have been reversed.

The guy can debate well but he doesn’t come across as a serious candidate.

I can't wait to see Alan's affect on the debates. Especially if he were to sing!

I guess this means he's rejoined the Republican party after leaving it, though.

He’s the guy that brought us the disease known as barack hussein osama obama... he lost to osama in a landslide....

....thanks in large part to the circus created by the IL-GOP and lack of leadership. Many of us still blame Judy Barr-Topinka for the circus that gave us the *ss-clown Barry Obama. The vector for this disease was the Ilinois GOP itself.

“Alan Keyes .... because I know right from wrong and kicked my own daughter out of the house to prove it.”

Interesting observation.  Maya Keyes was an adult when she was ‘kicked out’ from her parent’s home, into an apartment funded by Keyes' political organizations in Chicago.  Also, she marched in the protest against GWB inauguration in 2005, so I imagine that there was not only lesbian issue type of confrontation inside the family but ideological, too.  In her own words: “I actually voted for Nader in this past election,” …“I’m really an anarchist, but I felt this was an election that needed to be voted in.”  When an adult child goes so much against the parents/family values/ideology, first they should be able to stand on their own feet financially.  Parents are not obligated to keep adult children without a job in their house, or to finance their college.  Mostly, when we are talking about a child who is in a total confrontation with the parents.  This is just an observation.
