SHANKSVILLE, Pa. An environmental specialist for a Central City engineering firm was attacked by a buck while she was studying wetlands at a game preserve in Stonycreek Township Wednesday.
Jamie Detweiler, 35, of Ligonier, was flown by medical helicopter to Memorial Medical Center in Johnstown, where her condition was not immediately available.
Detweiler was doing wetlands dilineation at the preserve for Musser Engineering when the buck suddenly charged her, goring her in the leg, said Roger Harmon, owner of 6 Springs Hunts on Lambertsville Road in the shadows of the Flight 93 temporary memorial.
This is the first time its ever happened up here, said Harmon, who has operated the preserve for deer, wild boars and rams for the past five years.
Randy Musser, president of Musser engineering, said were thankful, thank God that Detweiler was not maimed even more severely.
State Wildlife Conservation Officer Travis Anderson was near the preserve when he heard reports of the attack over the scanner around 10:37 a.m.
Why the deer charged remains uncertain: Anderson said buck typically wont begin their rut for another six weeks or so.
The buck remains free on the fenced-in preserve, he added.
Deer inside fences sometimes have a tendency to be more used to human beings than other deer, Anderson said.
The woman was doing wetlands work inside the preserve when confronted by the buck.
does that work?
I thought deer only attacked evil white male hunters.
she may have been in mense herself.....a woman in mense can sure attract a large male dog....they always pick right up on it
unless some Humane Society nazi has clipped the poor feller
it’ll get their nose for sure....
There's a hilarious video of a guy that sprayed it on himself and had his wife take the video - he was almost killed ... it's still funny to watch ..
I wouldn’t want to be attacked by a wild boar. Those things are mean & nasty.
See - even the deer have found out about PA’s gun laws.
Colonial Pennsylvania frontiersman (and His Majesty’s indian agent) Conrad Weiser was gored to death by his pet deer. An antler tip pierced his femoral artery and he bled to death. I don’t think I would want a pet buck during rut season.
Doe scent works real well...there are several brands collected from does in heat (urine)....
Now, one thing, don't ever leave a bottle of Doe urine in a hot truck or car...the glass breaks and the smell will render the vehicle unusable.
MEGA BAMBI ALERT!
As Gen. Patton would say, kill the bastards!
(A 30-06 Core-Lokt to the neck works best. No 100 yard run, nothing. Just bang, plop, and start gutting.)
A Texas deer will mess you up, a PA deer will kill you. Big size difference.
I use the 180 grain.
I use the 150gr in ‘06. They give me flatter trajectory over longer distances and are way more than plenty for deer. I’d use the 180’s on hogs however.
Hey, fair’s fair. Why should the humans have all the fun ?
.
LOL!
“180 grain”
Ditto. My dream shot spoils no meat, makes the antlers collapse sideways, and results in a most interesting mount.
