Newt Gingrich, who must wake up each day spewing ideas and dispensing advice, offered a gloomy prognosis today of his party's chances of winning the White House in 2008 and his own prospects of running.
"I believe for any Republican to win in 2008, they have to have a clean break and offer a dramatic, bold change," he said. "If we nominate somebody who has not done that...they're very, very unlikely to win it."
Republicans must break with President Bush and separate themselves from the current state of the political system, he said, and so far none of the current candidates has met that test. But he also made clear that there is now almost no likelihood that he will become a candidate himself, having too little money, too much baggage and too much impatience for a successful campaign.
Gingrich, like many Republicans, believes Hillary Clinton will be the Democratic nominee, and he spoke with some awe of the Clinton machine after remarking on the fact that, on the same day, Bill Clinton was on Oprah and Hillary Clinton was on the Ellen DeGeneres show. "As a professional, I am very, very impressed," he said.
Clinton can be defeated, he said, but only by the kind of campaign that none of the potential nominees is yet running. "None of the Republicans have figured out how to get a routine, repetitive explanation of the future that breaks out of the current situation and that's their primary challenge," he said. "Whoever does that will both, I think, win the nomination and have a realistic chance of defeating Sen. Clinton."

I agree with Newt, too. Rudy McRomney were bad enough that everyone was looking for a conservative to come along and save us. And who do we come up with to save us? Fred Thompson, the 21st century version of Bob Dole! The Republican party is embarrassingly pathetic.

I sure agree with this assessment and would add that success spoiled Newt. It went to his head and he wasn’t/isn’t thinking logically enough to see the consequences of some of his more stupid, and I do mean stupid moves......moves that if he had just a smidgin of common sense would have told him, Don’t do this, it will come back to bite you big time.
I have no problem with having him in the background offering up some of his ideas, but out front......no way.

the killer was republican border policy lead by bush. he is still bent on ramming that through and destroying the country. never in the history of man has the leadership of a nation striven so implacably to destroy the people who nurtured and sustained them. it is both shocking and heartbreaking.
the current republican leadership that supports open borders needs to be entirely run out of town—and that includes bush and his family when his term is done.

Newt was talking about the Clinton machine. That includes voter fraud and smearing our candidate so bad that it depresses turnout. Our candidate, whoever it is, better be up to the fight as it will be extremely ugly. Skeletons in the closet will be exploited to the nth degree. This is what Newt knows all too well.

Sometimes I think that Newt is the smartest guy around, and other times I think that he’s an ass. He is great at finding fault and disparaging Republican candidates. Why doesn’t he turn that ability toward the Dems for a change? Maybe he should look at his own personal flaws before attacking others.

Part of me wants to tell Newt to shut the F up. But part of me fears he is right.
Yeah-I remember Rush Limbaugh and a lot of others in prominence spouting that exact same crap-also the same people saying “She’ll never be re-elected” and then “She’ll never run for president”. That’s why I’ve always become infuriated over the last few years hearing FReepers say “Bring on HillarY! Bring on Bill! They’ll be easiest to beat!” In your damned dreams. Well....here we are...and now you’ve got them.
I certainly agree with that, Newt. Bold change like drastically reducing the welfare state and guarding our borders and deporting illegals in earnest. ....for starters.
