Assault-Weapon Attacks on Rise in Miami
AP ^ | Sept 14, 2007 | Matt Sedensky

MIAMI (AP) - The spray of bullets that killed a police officer and hurt three others this week came from something increasingly common on this city's streets: a high-powered assault weapon, fast becoming the gun of choice for gang members and violent criminals.

And when the guns, once found solely in the hands of soldiers, are aimed at officers on patrol, there's little authorities can do to escape.

"It's almost like we have water pistols going up against these high-powered rifles," said John Rivera, president of the Dade County Police Benevolent Association. "Our weaponry and our bulletproof vests don't match up to any of those types of weapons."

Federal officials don't compile statistics on the number of crimes involving assault weapons like the AK-47, and municipalities' numbers across the country are patchwork. But in Miami, at least, there are signs it is becoming a major problem.

In 2005, the Miami-Dade Police Department reported two homicides involving an assault rifle; last year there were 10. That agency covers numerous unincorporated areas in the nation's eighth-largest county, but not its biggest cities, which have their own police forces.

The Miami Police Department said 15 of its 79 homicides last year involved assault weapons, up from the year before. This year, already 12 of the 60 homicides have involved the high-power guns. ...

The guns are readily available on streets, Baixauli said, or can be ordered by mail for under $200.

This is a tragedy and they haven't wasted a minute to try to use this cops death for their anti-gun agenda.

I also kinda wanna know why the ATF is allowing mail order gun sales and haven't told me about it.

Less than 200.00, by mail IF you have a C&R license.

“These bullets are very powerful: they go through walls, they go through cars,...”

.22 short bullets do this. Pellets do this.

MSM scary gun alert.

The very phrase “assault weapon” annoys me. Is there such a thing as a non-assault weapon?

See my post #3. The SKS fires the same round as the AK. The C&R (Curio and Relic) license is easy to get. SKS $179 and change, by mail order.

What are the odds this killer had a C&R?

“High powered assault weapons” are kinda like “Crispy ice cream”.

I wonder if the author has changed his panties yet. They must have been soaking wet by the time he finished his first paragraph.

I wonder if the “assault weapons” are being driven around by SUVs?

“Our weaponry and our bulletproof vests don’t match up to any of those types of weapons.”

Oh for heaven’s sake. The AK-47 is no more powerful than the common 30-30 winchester. In fact in 1902 Harry Tracy piled up lawman like cord wood with his and the remaining lawmen never whined about being “out gunned”. Get real!

Exactly! The only kind of rifles that you can order by mail are antique pre-1898 Winchesters, etc. or black powder muzzle loaders. And it has been that way since the gun control act of 1968

Don’t start using logic about ‘sault guns. They are eeeeeeevil an’ shoot bullets that are more powerful than an atomic cannon. Besides, a C&R license is so easy to get that the applications come with a box of cornflakes. And so on.......

He probably didn't but lots of people do, and they sell the C&Rs they buy.

The article seems to give the impression that you can get a gun in the mail just like Lee Harvey Oswald did. What a joke.

“More U.S. police officers were killed while on duty in the first six months of 2007 - 101 - than during any such period since 1978, according to the organization.”

Do you think this could have anything to do with the fact that we have more immigrants here from third world countrys who think nothing of waxing a Police Officer? And then they can always flee back to their home countrys.

80% of Miami-Dade homicides involved non-assault weapons - OK.

See my posts. SKS by mail. The C&R licencse is cheap and pretty easy to get. No, I bet the perp did not have a license but they are easy to get and there are SKS rifles and such easy to get for 150 - 250 bucks.

BTW I am NOT saying this should be changed, I am just pointing it out.
